Penile curvature angle

Hello, doctor.
Since I was young, my penis has always curved to the left when erect.
The entire shaft is bent to the left.
So far, I have never engaged in sexual intercourse, but I am worried that I might have issues in the future.
How can I measure the angle of the erection? If corrective surgery is necessary, will I need to be hospitalized?

Liu Lao, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/05/09

Dr. Chen Jiansheng reply Urology

Hello Mr.
Liu: When you have an erection, please take two photos from different angles using your phone or camera (self-taken is fine).
1.
From above (to observe the lateral deviation of the penis) 2.
From the side (to observe the vertical deviation of the penis).
Generally, if the angle exceeds 30 degrees, corrective surgery is required, which necessitates hospitalization and is performed under regional anesthesia.
The National Health Insurance covers this at Xinying Hospital, Urology Department, Dr.
Chen Jian-Sheng.

More Info

Understanding penile curvature, particularly when it is present from a young age, is important for both physical and psychological well-being. The condition you are describing, where the penis curves to one side during an erection, can be a source of concern for many individuals, especially regarding future sexual activity.

Measurement of Penile Curvature
To measure the angle of penile curvature, a healthcare provider typically uses a protractor or a specialized measuring device during a physical examination. The measurement is usually taken when the penis is fully erect. The angle is measured from the midline of the body to the line of the penis. This can be done in a clinical setting, and it is important to ensure that the measurement is taken accurately to assess the degree of curvature.

Treatment Options
If the curvature is significant and causes discomfort or difficulties during sexual activity, treatment options may be considered. Here are some common approaches:
1. Observation: If the curvature is mild and does not cause pain or interfere with sexual function, it may simply be monitored over time.

2. Medication: In some cases, medications such as oral phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (e.g., Viagra) may be prescribed to help with erectile function, although they do not directly correct curvature.

3. Penile Traction Therapy: This non-surgical option involves using a device that applies gentle traction to the penis over time, which may help to reduce curvature.

4. Surgery: If the curvature is severe and affects sexual function, surgical options may be considered. The most common surgical procedures include:
- Plication: This involves suturing the longer side of the penis to straighten it.

- Grafting: In cases of significant curvature, grafting may be performed to correct the shape.

- Penile Lengthening: If curvature is associated with a shortening of the penis, lengthening procedures may be performed.

Hospitalization and Recovery
If surgical intervention is deemed necessary, it typically requires a brief hospital stay, usually ranging from a few hours to a day, depending on the specific procedure and the patient's overall health. Most surgeries for penile curvature are performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you can go home the same day after a short recovery period in the hospital.

Postoperative Care
Post-surgery, patients are usually advised to avoid sexual activity for a period of time, often around 4-6 weeks, to allow for proper healing. Follow-up appointments will be necessary to monitor recovery and ensure that the curvature has been adequately addressed.

Conclusion
It is understandable to have concerns about how penile curvature may affect future sexual relationships. If you are experiencing anxiety or distress regarding this condition, it may be beneficial to consult with a urologist who specializes in sexual health. They can provide a thorough evaluation, discuss your options, and help you make an informed decision about whether treatment is necessary. Remember, many individuals with penile curvature lead fulfilling sexual lives, and there are options available if intervention is needed.
