Foreign body sensation in the throat?

Hello doctor, I have been experiencing a sensation of having something in my throat whenever I yawn, starting from an unknown time in the past.
Sometimes, if I yawn too forcefully, it feels like that "thing" gets bigger, and I have a bit of trouble breathing, which lasts for a maximum of 3 seconds and is quite uncomfortable.
What could this be? Sorry for the disturbance.

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology

Hello: The most common condition related to chronic pharyngitis may be associated with post-nasal drip or gastroesophageal reflux.
If there is no improvement, it is recommended to consult an otolaryngologist or a gastroenterologist for further evaluation.
Wishing you peace and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info

Feeling a lump in your throat when yawning can be a distressing experience, and it’s understandable that you’re seeking answers. This sensation, often described as a "lump in the throat" or "globus sensation," can arise from various causes, both physical and psychological.

Possible Causes
1. Muscle Tension: One of the most common reasons for feeling a lump in the throat is muscle tension. The muscles in the throat can become tense due to stress, anxiety, or even habitual behaviors. When you yawn, the act of opening your mouth wide can exacerbate this tension, leading to the sensation of a lump.

2. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Acid reflux can cause irritation in the throat, leading to a feeling of something being stuck. When you yawn, the pressure changes in your throat can make this sensation more pronounced.

3. Postnasal Drip: Allergies or sinus issues can lead to mucus dripping down the back of your throat, which can create a feeling of fullness or a lump, especially when yawning.

4. Throat Inflammation: Conditions such as pharyngitis or tonsillitis can cause swelling in the throat, leading to discomfort or the sensation of a lump.

5. Psychological Factors: Anxiety and stress can manifest physically in various ways, including the sensation of a lump in the throat. This is often referred to as "globus hystericus" and can occur even in the absence of any physical abnormalities.

6. Thyroid Issues: In some cases, an enlarged thyroid gland (goiter) can cause a sensation of fullness in the throat. If you have other symptoms such as changes in weight, energy levels, or temperature sensitivity, it may be worth discussing with a healthcare provider.

Solutions and Recommendations
1. Relaxation Techniques: If muscle tension is suspected, practicing relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga can help alleviate the sensation.
2. Hydration: Ensure you are well-hydrated, as dryness in the throat can exacerbate discomfort. Drinking plenty of water can help.

3. Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that allergies or reflux may be contributing to your symptoms, try to identify and avoid triggers. This may include certain foods, allergens, or environmental factors.

4. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the sensation persists or worsens, it’s important to consult with a healthcare provider. They may perform a physical examination, and if necessary, refer you to an ENT specialist or a gastroenterologist for further evaluation.

5. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): If anxiety is a contributing factor, cognitive behavioral therapy can be beneficial. It helps in addressing the underlying thoughts and behaviors that contribute to anxiety and physical symptoms.

6. Medication: In some cases, medications may be prescribed to address underlying conditions such as GERD or anxiety. Discussing your symptoms with a healthcare provider can help determine the best course of action.

Conclusion
Feeling a lump in your throat when yawning can stem from various causes, including muscle tension, reflux, or psychological factors. While it can be uncomfortable, there are several strategies you can employ to alleviate the sensation. However, if the feeling persists or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms, seeking medical advice is crucial for proper diagnosis and treatment. Remember, you are not alone in this experience, and there are effective ways to manage and overcome these sensations.
