Dr. Xu Jiazhen reply Otolaryngology
Hello: Generally, it is mostly caused by muscle strain, and in rare cases, it may be due to inflammation of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
It is advisable to rest and avoid chewing hard foods.
If the symptoms persist, it is recommended to consult a specialist for safer management.
Sincerely, Hsu Chia-Chen.

More Info
Throat pain when yawning can be a concerning symptom, and understanding its causes is essential for determining the appropriate course of action. When you yawn, your mouth opens wide, and the muscles and tissues in your throat are stretched. If you experience pain specifically on the left side of your throat during this action, several potential causes could be at play.
1. Muscle Strain: One of the most common reasons for localized pain in the throat when yawning is muscle strain. The act of yawning involves the stretching of various muscles in the neck and throat. If these muscles are tense or have been overused, they can become sore, leading to discomfort during yawning.
2. Tonsillitis or Pharyngitis: Inflammation of the tonsils (tonsillitis) or the pharynx (pharyngitis) can cause pain in the throat, especially when yawning. These conditions are often accompanied by other symptoms such as sore throat, difficulty swallowing, and sometimes fever. If you have had recent symptoms of a cold or flu, this could be a contributing factor.
3. Referred Pain: Sometimes, pain in the throat can be referred from other areas, such as the jaw or ears. Conditions like temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders can lead to discomfort in the throat area, particularly when the jaw is moved widely, as in yawning.
4. Infections: Viral or bacterial infections can lead to localized pain in the throat. If you have been experiencing other symptoms such as fever, swollen lymph nodes, or a persistent sore throat, it may be worth consulting a healthcare provider for further evaluation.
5. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): GERD can cause throat pain due to acid reflux irritating the lining of the throat. This discomfort may be more noticeable during activities that involve opening the mouth wide, such as yawning.
6. Allergies or Irritants: Allergies to environmental factors or irritants can lead to inflammation in the throat, which may cause pain when yawning. If you notice that your symptoms worsen in certain environments or after exposure to allergens, this could be a contributing factor.
Solutions and Recommendations:
- Rest and Hydration: Ensure you are well-hydrated and allow your throat to rest. Warm teas or broths can be soothing.
- Warm Compress: Applying a warm compress to the neck can help alleviate muscle tension and reduce discomfort.
- Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: Non-prescription pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, can help manage pain and inflammation.
- Avoid Irritants: If allergies are suspected, try to avoid known allergens and consider using an antihistamine if appropriate.
- Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the pain persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms (such as difficulty swallowing, high fever, or significant swelling), it is essential to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough examination and may recommend tests, such as throat cultures or imaging studies, to determine the underlying cause.
In summary, throat pain when yawning can arise from various causes, ranging from muscle strain to infections. Understanding the context of your symptoms and seeking appropriate care can help address the issue effectively. If you have any further concerns or if the pain continues, please consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice and treatment options.
