On January 3, 2021, Sunday, while I was out with my family during the day, I yawned in the car and suddenly felt pain in my left throat. After that, the pain in my left throat started?

On January 3, 2021, a Sunday, I went out with my family during the day.
While yawning in the car, I suddenly felt pain in my left throat, and since then, I have been experiencing pain in the left side of my throat.
Doctor, this doesn't happen to me often! Last year, I had a similar incident in April when I suddenly felt pain in my left throat while having dinner, but it went away a few hours after eating.
Now, on January 3, 2021, Sunday, after yawning, I started to feel pain in my left throat again, and now, even without yawning, I still experience pain in the left throat, which is sometimes accompanied by an itchy sensation.
Could you please tell me if this is a tonsil issue or a throat issue? Could this be a sign of cancer?

Hello: If you experience a sudden sore throat after yawning, it may be related to excessive stretching of the throat muscles.
If the pain persists and does not improve, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation and treatment.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

Sudden throat pain, especially when it occurs after yawning, can be concerning and may have various underlying causes. In your case, the sudden onset of pain on the left side of your throat after yawning, followed by persistent discomfort and itching, raises several possibilities.

One common cause of sudden throat pain is muscle strain. Yawning involves the stretching of muscles in the throat and jaw, and if there is any underlying tension or strain in those muscles, it can lead to pain. This is particularly true if you have been experiencing stress or have been in a position that puts strain on your neck and throat muscles.

Another possibility is that you may be experiencing a form of pharyngitis or tonsillitis. These conditions can cause localized pain in the throat, especially if there is inflammation or infection present. If you have had recurrent episodes of throat pain, it may be worth considering whether you have chronic tonsillitis or other related conditions.

Allergies or irritants can also contribute to throat discomfort. If you have been exposed to allergens or irritants, such as smoke or strong odors, this could lead to inflammation in the throat, resulting in pain and itching. Additionally, post-nasal drip from allergies or sinus issues can irritate the throat and cause discomfort.

Regarding your concern about cancer, while it is understandable to worry about serious conditions, it is important to note that sudden throat pain is not typically a direct indicator of cancer. Cancer-related throat pain is usually accompanied by other symptoms, such as difficulty swallowing, persistent hoarseness, or a lump in the throat. However, if you have persistent pain, difficulty swallowing, or any other concerning symptoms, it is essential to seek medical evaluation to rule out any serious conditions.

In summary, the sudden left throat pain you are experiencing after yawning could be due to muscle strain, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, or irritation from allergens. It is advisable to monitor your symptoms closely. If the pain persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms, you should consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. They may recommend a physical examination, throat swabs, or imaging studies if necessary to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. In the meantime, staying hydrated, using throat lozenges, and avoiding irritants may help alleviate your discomfort.
