I have been experiencing frequent urination unusually over the past couple of days?

Recently, I have not been waking up in the morning, and my DIY measurements have been very low.
I have been experiencing symptoms such as split urine stream, fatigue, occasional pain in the urethra, and poor erectile function.
Therefore, I consulted a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner.
Initially, there was some improvement, but during a follow-up visit about three days ago, the prescribed medication (a new drug that I have been taking for about two to three days, twice a day) has caused abnormal erections.
By "abnormal erections," I mean that even a slight urge to urinate leads to an erection.
Although I can hold it, my urine output is more than one-third less than usual.
I also occasionally experience cramping in my lower abdomen, and my legs and hips sometimes feel sore.
Could this indicate a problem with my kidneys?

Dr. Yan Sumei reply Traditional Chinese Medicine

Dear online friend Xiao Kai: Based on your symptom description, I recommend that you first consult a urologist to check for any urinary tract infections.
If there are no issues with the urinary tract, then you may seek treatment from a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner for further management.
As for whether it is a kidney issue, a more thorough examination is needed, as it cannot be determined solely from your description.
Wishing you health and safety! Sincerely, Yan Sumei, Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Nantou Hospital.

Frequent urination can be a complex issue, often influenced by various physiological and psychological factors. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the understanding of frequent urination is rooted in the concepts of balance within the body's systems, particularly the kidneys, bladder, and the flow of Qi (energy) and blood.

From your description, it seems that you have been experiencing a range of urinary symptoms, including reduced urine volume, discomfort, and abnormal sensations. In TCM, the kidneys are considered the source of vitality and are closely linked to urinary function. Symptoms such as frequent urination, especially when accompanied by discomfort or pain, may indicate an imbalance in kidney function or a deficiency in kidney Qi or Yin.

1. Kidney Function and Urinary Symptoms: In TCM, the kidneys are responsible for storing essence and regulating water metabolism. If the kidneys are weak (often referred to as "kidney deficiency"), this can lead to symptoms such as frequent urination, lower back pain, and fatigue. The sensation of needing to urinate frequently, even with little output, may suggest that the bladder is not being properly nourished or that there is an obstruction in the flow of Qi.

2. Diagnosis and Treatment: TCM practitioners often diagnose conditions based on pulse and tongue examination, along with a detailed patient history. If your TCM practitioner has prescribed herbs, it is essential to communicate any new or worsening symptoms, such as the abnormal sensations you described. The herbs may be intended to tonify the kidneys or clear heat, but if they are causing discomfort or unusual reactions, adjustments may be necessary.

3. Potential Side Effects of Herbal Medicine: While many patients experience benefits from TCM herbal treatments, side effects can occur. The herbs you are taking may not be suitable for your specific condition or may need to be adjusted based on your body's response. If you are experiencing unusual symptoms like the ones you described (e.g., abnormal erections, pain, and reduced urine output), it is crucial to consult your TCM practitioner immediately. They may need to modify your treatment plan or explore other underlying issues.

4. Lifestyle and Dietary Considerations: In addition to herbal treatment, TCM emphasizes the importance of lifestyle and diet in managing health. Avoiding excessive consumption of cold or raw foods, which can dampen the digestive fire and affect kidney function, may be beneficial. Incorporating warming foods and maintaining a balanced diet can support overall health and urinary function.

5. Consultation with Western Medicine: Given the complexity of your symptoms, it may also be wise to consult with a Western medical professional, particularly a urologist, to rule out any underlying conditions that may require different treatment approaches. Conditions such as urinary tract infections, prostate issues, or other urological disorders can present with similar symptoms and may need to be addressed concurrently with your TCM treatment.

In conclusion, while TCM can provide valuable insights and treatments for frequent urination, it is essential to maintain open communication with your healthcare providers, both TCM and Western medicine. Monitoring your symptoms closely and adjusting your treatment plan as necessary will be key to finding relief and restoring balance to your urinary function. Remember, your health is a priority, and seeking comprehensive care is the best approach to address your concerns effectively.
