Post-Circumcision Concerns: Swelling and Pain After 18 Days - Urology

Issues After Circumcision

It has been 18 days since my circumcision, and the stitches have fallen out.
The area around the circumcision site is still very swollen, about the same as it was a week post-surgery.
It doesn't feel like the swelling has decreased at all.
When I walk, if I bump into my testicles, it can still be painful (sometimes mild discomfort, but at other times it can be quite painful).
Is this considered normal? I’ve seen online that some people can exercise after two weeks, but I’m almost three weeks post-op and still have issues even walking.

It is indeed strange, but issues related to the foreskin should be assessed in person.
It is advisable to consult the original surgeon, as they would be aware of any other potential problems.

After undergoing a circumcision, it is not uncommon to experience swelling and discomfort for a period of time. However, the duration and intensity of these symptoms can vary significantly from person to person. In your case, experiencing significant swelling and pain 18 days post-surgery is concerning, especially since you mentioned that the swelling feels similar to what it was a week after the procedure.

Typically, after a circumcision, the swelling should start to decrease within the first week, and most patients can return to normal activities, including light exercise, within two to three weeks. However, factors such as individual healing rates, the extent of the surgery, and post-operative care can influence recovery times.
1. Swelling and Pain: Persistent swelling and pain can be attributed to several factors. It could be a normal part of the healing process, especially if there was significant tissue manipulation during the procedure. However, if the swelling has not improved and is accompanied by pain, it could indicate complications such as infection, hematoma (a localized collection of blood outside of blood vessels), or improper healing of the surgical site.

2. Pain During Movement: The pain you experience when walking or with any movement that involves the area is also a concern. While some discomfort is expected, especially in the early stages of recovery, significant pain that interferes with daily activities is not typical. The fact that you feel pain when the area is bumped or jostled suggests that the tissue may still be inflamed or that there may be other underlying issues.

3. Comparison with Others: It’s important to remember that recovery experiences can vary widely. Some individuals may heal faster and return to their normal activities sooner than others. Factors such as age, overall health, and adherence to post-operative care instructions can all play a role in recovery times.

4. When to Seek Help: Given that you are approaching three weeks post-surgery and are still experiencing significant swelling and pain, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider. They can assess the surgical site for any signs of infection or other complications and provide guidance on appropriate management strategies.
5. Post-Operative Care: In the meantime, ensure that you are following any post-operative care instructions provided by your surgeon. This may include keeping the area clean and dry, avoiding strenuous activities, and possibly using ice packs to reduce swelling. If you notice any signs of infection, such as increased redness, warmth, or discharge from the surgical site, seek medical attention promptly.

In summary, while some swelling and discomfort can be expected after a circumcision, persistent symptoms that do not improve over time warrant further evaluation by a healthcare professional. It is essential to communicate your concerns to your doctor, who can provide a thorough assessment and appropriate interventions to facilitate your recovery.
