Post-circumcision care
Hello, doctor.
I am currently on the eighth day after my circumcision surgery.
Last night, I took my first shower and rinsed the surgical area with just water.
This morning, I noticed that the area behind the glans has become more swollen, and the right side is more swollen and red, with some tenderness upon touch.
Additionally, when the penis and testicles come into contact for a period of time without an erection, they tend to stick together.
Are these symptoms considered normal?

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology
Hello: Rinse thoroughly and dry off.
Wear loose-fitting underwear.
If swelling, pain, or redness persists, it may indicate inflammation, and you should seek medical attention.
Wishing you good health.

Post-circumcision concerns such as swelling, pain, and healing are common and can vary significantly from person to person. It is important to understand what is considered normal healing and when to seek further medical advice.
Firstly, it is normal to experience some degree of swelling and discomfort after circumcision. The surgical site is healing, and inflammation is a natural part of the healing process. However, the degree of swelling and pain can vary. Typically, mild swelling and tenderness are expected in the first week after surgery, but if the swelling increases significantly or if the pain becomes severe, it may indicate a complication.
In your case, since you are on the eighth day post-surgery and have noticed increased swelling, particularly on the right side, along with redness and pain, it is essential to monitor these symptoms closely. Redness can be a sign of inflammation, and if it is accompanied by warmth or increased pain, it could suggest an infection. Additionally, if you notice any discharge from the surgical site or if the swelling does not begin to decrease after a few days, you should contact your healthcare provider.
The sensation of the glans (the head of the penis) sticking to the shaft of the penis is also not uncommon during the healing process. This can occur due to the formation of scabs or the healing tissue adhering to the surrounding skin. It is generally advisable to avoid any forceful separation of these areas, as this can cause additional trauma to the healing tissue.
Here are some general tips for post-circumcision care that may help alleviate your concerns:
1. Hygiene: Keep the area clean and dry. You can gently wash the area with mild soap and water, but avoid scrubbing the surgical site. Pat it dry gently with a clean towel.
2. Swelling Management: If you experience significant swelling, applying a cold compress to the area can help reduce inflammation. Ensure that the compress is not applied directly to the skin; wrap it in a cloth to avoid frostbite.
3. Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relief medications, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help manage discomfort. Always follow the dosage instructions on the packaging or those provided by your healthcare provider.
4. Avoid Irritation: Wear loose-fitting underwear and avoid activities that may irritate the area, such as vigorous exercise or sexual activity, until you have fully healed.
5. Follow-Up: It is crucial to attend any follow-up appointments with your healthcare provider. They can assess the healing process and address any concerns you may have.
In conclusion, while some swelling and discomfort are normal after circumcision, increased swelling, redness, and pain warrant further evaluation. If your symptoms persist or worsen, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for a thorough examination and appropriate management. Your health and comfort are paramount, and it is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to post-surgical recovery.
