Abortion
I had a medical abortion on May 20.
For the first two days, there wasn't much bleeding.
On May 22, I started experiencing severe uterine pain and the bleeding increased, changing from brown to bright red, similar to menstrual flow.
On May 25, I passed some blood clots.
Is this normal? The doctor prescribed medication for pain and contractions, as well as antibiotics.
During a follow-up visit, the doctor mentioned that there were some small blood clots.

After an abortion, it is common for women to experience a range of symptoms as their body begins to recover. Understanding what to expect can help alleviate concerns and ensure that any complications are addressed promptly.
In your case, having undergone a medical abortion on May 20, it is not unusual to experience varying degrees of bleeding and cramping in the days following the procedure. Here’s a breakdown of what you might expect and what could be considered normal:
1. Bleeding Patterns: After an abortion, it is typical to have some bleeding that can last for several days to weeks. Initially, you may notice light spotting, which can progress to heavier bleeding similar to a menstrual period. The fact that you experienced minimal bleeding for the first two days followed by heavier bleeding with clots is within the realm of normal post-abortion symptoms. The bleeding can vary in color from brown (old blood) to bright red (fresh blood), and it is common for the flow to fluctuate.
2. Cramping: Cramping is also a common symptom after an abortion. The uterus contracts to expel its contents, which can cause discomfort. The intensity of the pain can vary, and it is often described as similar to menstrual cramps. If you are experiencing significant pain, it is important to manage it with the medications prescribed by your doctor, such as pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs.
3. Blood Clots: The presence of small blood clots in the bleeding can be normal, especially in the first week or two after the procedure. However, if you notice large clots (larger than a golf ball), or if the bleeding becomes excessively heavy (soaking through a pad in an hour), you should contact your healthcare provider immediately, as these could be signs of complications.
4. Follow-Up Care: It is essential to keep up with follow-up appointments after an abortion. Your doctor will monitor your recovery and check for any signs of infection or retained tissue. If your doctor noted "a little blood clot" during your visit, it may indicate that your body is still in the process of expelling the remaining tissue.
5. Signs of Complications: While some bleeding and cramping are normal, you should be vigilant for signs of complications. These include:
- Severe abdominal pain that does not improve with medication.
- Heavy bleeding that soaks through two or more pads in an hour for two consecutive hours.
- Fever or chills, which could indicate an infection.
- Foul-smelling discharge.
6. Emotional Well-being: It’s also important to consider the emotional aspect of undergoing an abortion. Many women experience a range of emotions post-procedure, including relief, sadness, or anxiety. Seeking support from friends, family, or a mental health professional can be beneficial.
In summary, your symptoms of cramping and varying bleeding after your abortion are generally normal. However, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms closely and maintain communication with your healthcare provider. If you have any concerns or if your symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to reach out for medical advice. Your health and well-being are paramount during this recovery period.
