Menstruation after abortion?
I underwent an abortion procedure on April 23, and I experienced slight bleeding afterward, which continued until May 10 before it completely stopped.
However, by the end of the month, I still haven't had my menstrual period.
Is this normal? How long does it typically take for the next menstrual period to occur?
Niming, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/05/29
Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, based on your symptom description, it is recommended to undergo an examination if your menstrual period does not occur by the 6th to 10th of the month.
During this time, appropriate contraceptive measures should be taken.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Zhang.

More Info
After undergoing an abortion, it is common for women to experience a variety of physical and emotional changes, including alterations in their menstrual cycle. In your case, having had a surgical abortion on April 23 and experiencing light bleeding until May 10, followed by a delay in the return of your menstrual period, is not unusual.
Typically, after an abortion, the menstrual cycle may take some time to normalize. The timing of your next period can vary significantly based on several factors, including how far along you were in your pregnancy, your individual hormonal balance, and your overall health. Generally, most women can expect their menstrual cycle to return within four to six weeks following an abortion. However, it is not uncommon for some women to experience delays of up to eight weeks or longer, especially if they had irregular cycles prior to the pregnancy.
The absence of your period for a few weeks post-abortion can be attributed to the body’s need to readjust hormone levels. After an abortion, the body must recalibrate its hormonal environment to prepare for the next cycle. This recalibration can lead to variations in the timing and flow of your subsequent periods.
If you have not experienced your period by the end of the eight-week mark, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider. They may recommend a pregnancy test to rule out the possibility of retained products of conception or a new pregnancy, especially if you have engaged in unprotected intercourse since the abortion.
In addition to hormonal adjustments, emotional factors can also play a role in the return of your menstrual cycle. Stress, anxiety, and emotional well-being can impact hormonal balance, potentially leading to delays in menstruation.
It is also important to monitor your body for any unusual symptoms following an abortion. If you experience severe pain, heavy bleeding, or signs of infection (such as fever or foul-smelling discharge), you should seek medical attention promptly.
In summary, while it is generally normal for your menstrual cycle to take some time to return after an abortion, if you find that your period does not resume within a reasonable timeframe, or if you have any concerns about your health, it is best to consult with your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance. They can provide you with personalized advice based on your medical history and current health status.
