Breast issues

Hello, doctor.
Today I discovered a laceration under my left nipple.
I usually don't touch it, except when showering.
Could this be related to my fibrocystic changes? A few years ago, I was diagnosed with a fibroadenoma in my left breast, and I have been undergoing regular follow-ups.
Can benign conditions turn malignant?

bi, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/05/30

Dr. Wu Jianting reply Breast and Thyroid

Fibroadenomas are located deeper in the subcutaneous fat layer and rarely cause skin rupture.
The likelihood of benign fibroadenomas turning malignant is also low.
It is recommended to seek medical attention for skin wounds.
Thank you for your inquiry.

Understanding breast issues, particularly concerning fibroadenomas and nipple concerns, is crucial for maintaining breast health and addressing any potential worries. Fibroadenomas are benign (non-cancerous) tumors that are commonly found in the breast tissue, especially among younger women. They are typically characterized by a firm, smooth, and movable lump within the breast. While they are generally harmless, it is essential to monitor them regularly, as changes in size or shape can occur.

In your case, the discovery of a ruptured area beneath your left nipple raises some questions. It is important to consider a few factors. First, fibroadenomas themselves do not typically cause skin changes or ruptures. However, if there is any irritation, friction, or trauma to the area, it could lead to skin breakdown or injury. This could happen even if you are not consciously touching the area, as clothing or other external factors might contribute to irritation.

Regarding your concern about whether a fibroadenoma can turn malignant, it is important to note that fibroadenomas are generally stable and do not transform into breast cancer. However, there are rare cases where complex fibroadenomas, which may have additional features such as cysts or atypical cells, could warrant closer monitoring. Regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider, including imaging studies like ultrasounds or mammograms, are essential to ensure that any changes in the fibroadenoma are detected early.

If you are experiencing persistent pain, discomfort, or any unusual changes in your breast, such as the ruptured area you mentioned, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional, preferably a breast specialist. They can perform a thorough examination and may recommend further imaging or a biopsy if necessary to rule out any other conditions.

In addition to fibroadenomas, other potential causes for nipple issues include infections, dermatitis, or other benign conditions. For instance, conditions like eczema or contact dermatitis can cause the skin around the nipple to become irritated and may lead to cracking or peeling. If you notice any signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, or discharge, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.

In summary, while fibroadenomas are benign and typically do not pose a risk of cancer, any new or concerning symptoms, such as a ruptured area on the nipple, should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. Regular monitoring and open communication with your doctor will help ensure that any changes in your breast health are addressed appropriately. Remember, early detection and intervention are key to managing breast health effectively.
