The prominent blood vessel on the underside of the penis may become red, swollen, and painful?
Recently, while doing DIY, I noticed that a thin blood vessel located just below the penis on the foreskin has become red, swollen, and painful.
It also hurts when I pull back the foreskin to wash during a shower.
What could be the cause? This blood vessel is located on the underside of the foreskin and is slightly protruding even when not erect.

Understanding painful swollen veins under the foreskin can be concerning, and it's important to address the symptoms you're experiencing. The condition you're describing may be related to a few potential causes, including inflammation, infection, or vascular issues.
One common cause of swollen veins in the genital area is varicose veins, which can occur in the penis and surrounding areas. This happens when the veins become enlarged due to increased pressure or poor blood flow. The pain and swelling you are experiencing could be a result of this condition, particularly if the vein appears prominent and is tender to the touch.
Another possibility is phlebitis, which is the inflammation of a vein. This can occur due to various reasons, including trauma, prolonged sitting or standing, or even infection. If the vein is inflamed, it may become red, swollen, and painful, especially when you manipulate the area during washing or other activities.
Infections, such as balanitis (inflammation of the glans) or posthitis (inflammation of the foreskin), can also lead to swelling and pain. These conditions are often caused by poor hygiene, irritants, or sexually transmitted infections. If you notice any discharge, unusual odor, or additional symptoms like fever, it is crucial to seek medical attention.
Additionally, thrombophlebitis can occur when a blood clot forms in the vein, leading to swelling and pain. This condition may require medical evaluation and treatment, especially if you have risk factors such as a history of blood clots or prolonged immobility.
To address your symptoms, consider the following steps:
1. Maintain Hygiene: Ensure that the area is kept clean and dry. Gently wash the area with mild soap and water, and avoid harsh chemicals or irritants.
2. Warm Compress: Applying a warm compress to the affected area may help reduce pain and swelling. Make sure the compress is not too hot to avoid burns.
3. Avoid Irritation: Refrain from any activities that may exacerbate the pain, such as vigorous sexual activity or tight clothing that may put pressure on the area.
4. Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: If the pain is significant, consider using over-the-counter pain relief medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, following the recommended dosages.
5. Seek Medical Attention: If the swelling and pain persist, worsen, or are accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, discharge, or significant discomfort, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional. They may perform a physical examination and possibly recommend imaging studies or blood tests to determine the underlying cause.
In conclusion, while swollen veins under the foreskin can be caused by various factors, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. Maintaining good hygiene, avoiding irritants, and seeking medical advice when necessary can help manage the condition effectively. If you have any concerns about your symptoms or if they persist, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation and appropriate treatment.
