Red swelling of the foreskin at the edge of the glans?
A few days ago, I suddenly experienced intense itching at the edge of the glans where the foreskin is located, and I slightly broke the skin from scratching.
That night, the area below the glans became completely red and swollen, and it was somewhat painful when pressed.
After seeing a doctor, I was prescribed medication for the wound.
Now that the wound is almost healed, the swelling has become increasingly severe.
The foreskin feels tight to the touch, and even the frenulum and the area around the urethral opening feel slightly swollen.
I experience discomfort when my pants press against it.
What could be causing this swelling, and how can I reduce it? Should I apply ice or heat?

Hello: Theoretically, if the wound has healed, there should be no further swelling.
It is advisable to seek medical evaluation to check for any circulation issues or to determine if phimosis is causing the swelling.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
Swelling and discomfort in the foreskin area can be concerning and may arise from various causes, including infections, inflammation, or trauma. Based on your description, it seems you initially experienced itching and a minor skin tear, which subsequently led to redness and swelling in the foreskin area. This progression suggests a possible inflammatory response, which could be due to several factors.
Possible Causes
1. Infection: One of the most common causes of swelling and discomfort in the foreskin area is an infection, such as balanitis (inflammation of the glans) or posthitis (inflammation of the foreskin). These conditions can be caused by bacteria, fungi, or irritants.
2. Allergic Reaction: Sometimes, an allergic reaction to soaps, lotions, or even latex from condoms can lead to localized swelling and irritation.
3. Trauma: As you mentioned scratching the area, any trauma can lead to inflammation and swelling as the body responds to the injury.
4. Phimosis: If the foreskin is too tight and cannot be easily retracted, it can lead to discomfort and swelling, especially if there is an underlying infection.
5. Dermatological Conditions: Conditions like eczema or psoriasis can also affect the genital area, leading to itching, redness, and swelling.
Remedies and Management
1. Topical Treatments: Since your doctor prescribed a topical medication for the initial injury, continue using it as directed. If the swelling persists, you may need a different topical treatment, such as a mild corticosteroid cream to reduce inflammation, but this should be discussed with your healthcare provider.
2. Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress can help reduce swelling and numb the area, providing relief from discomfort. Use a clean cloth wrapped around ice or a cold pack, applying it for 15-20 minutes several times a day.
3. Avoid Irritants: Ensure that you are not using any harsh soaps or products that could irritate the area. Opt for mild, fragrance-free cleansers.
4. Hygiene: Maintain good hygiene by gently cleaning the area with warm water. Avoid scrubbing, as this can exacerbate irritation.
5. Avoid Tight Clothing: Wearing loose-fitting underwear and pants can help reduce pressure on the swollen area, minimizing discomfort.
6. Pain Relief: Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage pain and discomfort. However, avoid aspirin if you have any bleeding concerns, especially since you mentioned a skin tear.
7. Heat Therapy: While ice is generally recommended for swelling, if you feel that heat provides relief, you can try warm baths or a warm compress. However, be cautious as heat can sometimes exacerbate inflammation.
When to Seek Further Medical Attention
If the swelling does not improve with home care, or if you experience increased pain, fever, or discharge, it is crucial to return to your healthcare provider. They may need to perform further evaluations, such as a swab for culture to check for infections or other underlying conditions.
In summary, the swelling and discomfort in your foreskin area could be due to various causes, and while home remedies like cold compresses and good hygiene can help, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If the situation does not improve, seeking further medical advice is necessary to ensure appropriate treatment and management.
