Itching inside the glans?
Hello Doctor: My boyfriend mentioned that after oral sex, he felt an itch inside the glans the next day, not on the outside.
He described it as a sensation similar to being bitten by a mosquito, where he wants to scratch but can't reach it.
There are no visible abnormalities, no discharge, and no pain.
Could this be urethritis? Additionally, I observed some small red bumps at the base of his penis, which are especially noticeable after wearing a condom.
Could this be eczema? Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Hello: If there is a possibility of urethritis, further testing is required to determine the issue with the perineal skin.
It is difficult to assist with this through online consultations, so please visit the outpatient clinic for a personal diagnosis by a physician.

Understanding the symptoms your boyfriend is experiencing after oral sex is crucial for addressing any potential health concerns. The itchiness he describes in the glans (the head of the penis) could be attributed to several factors, and while it may not necessarily indicate a sexually transmitted infection (STI), it is essential to consider various possibilities.
1. Irritation or Allergic Reaction: One common cause of itchiness in the genital area, especially after oral sex, is irritation or an allergic reaction. This could be due to the use of flavored lubricants, condoms, or even saliva. If your boyfriend has sensitive skin, these products can lead to localized irritation, resulting in the itchy sensation he describes.
2. Fungal Infections: Another possibility is a fungal infection, such as candidiasis (commonly known as a yeast infection). While more prevalent in women, men can also experience yeast infections, particularly if they have a compromised immune system or if they are uncircumcised. Symptoms may include itching, redness, and sometimes a white discharge, although your boyfriend does not report any discharge.
3. Bacterial Infections: Urethritis, an inflammation of the urethra, can also cause itching and discomfort. This condition can result from bacterial infections, which may not always present with noticeable symptoms like discharge or pain. If the itchiness persists, it would be wise for him to consult a healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis.
4. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): While your boyfriend does not exhibit typical symptoms of STIs (such as pain, discharge, or sores), it is still important to consider the possibility of infections like herpes or HPV, which can sometimes present with mild symptoms. The presence of red bumps at the base of the penis could also indicate folliculitis or a reaction to hair follicles, but it’s essential to rule out STIs through testing.
5. Dermatological Conditions: Conditions such as eczema or psoriasis can also manifest as itchy patches on the skin, including the genital area. If the red bumps are persistent and do not respond to typical treatments, a dermatologist may need to evaluate them.
Given these possibilities, it is advisable for your boyfriend to seek medical attention if the symptoms persist or worsen. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough examination, possibly including swabs or cultures, to determine the exact cause of the symptoms. They may also recommend appropriate treatments, which could range from topical creams for irritation to antifungal or antibacterial medications if an infection is diagnosed.
In the meantime, he should avoid any potential irritants, such as scented soaps or lotions, and consider wearing loose-fitting underwear to minimize irritation. Maintaining good hygiene and ensuring that any sexual partners are also aware of their health status can help reduce the risk of STIs and other infections.
In summary, while the symptoms your boyfriend is experiencing may not immediately suggest a serious condition, they warrant further investigation to ensure proper treatment and peace of mind. Encourage him to consult with a healthcare professional to address his concerns effectively.
