Dr. Liao Yaopan reply Family Medicine
Hello, health check-ups are all self-paid and not covered by health insurance.
The costs are billed item by item based on the services provided.
Currently, only the National Health Administration offers adult health check-ups, but they are limited to individuals aged 40 to 65 every three years, and annually for those over 65.
The check-up includes measurements of height, weight, waist circumference, vision, and blood pressure, along with urine and blood tests (blood glucose, lipid profile, liver and kidney function).
For more information, you can refer to our hospital's Health Management Center website or call 04-8298686 ext 3812/3832 at Changhua Hospital.
We care about you.

When it comes to understanding health checkups, it's essential to differentiate between general health screenings and comprehensive health examinations. Each type of checkup serves different purposes and includes various tests, and the costs can vary significantly based on the services provided and whether insurance is applicable.
Q1: What are the typical items included in general health checkups versus comprehensive health examinations?
General Health Checkup:
A general health checkup typically includes basic assessments and tests aimed at identifying common health issues. Common components include:
- Physical Examination: A thorough physical assessment by a healthcare provider.
- Blood Tests: This usually includes a Complete Blood Count (CBC), blood glucose levels, and lipid profile (cholesterol and triglycerides).
- Urinalysis: A routine urine test to check for signs of kidney disease or diabetes.
- Liver and Kidney Function Tests: Blood tests to assess liver enzymes (GOT, GPT) and kidney function (BUN, creatinine).
- Blood Pressure Measurement: To check for hypertension.
Comprehensive Health Examination:
A comprehensive health examination goes beyond the basics and often includes additional tests and screenings tailored to the individual's age, gender, and health history. This may include:
- Advanced Blood Tests: Tests for specific conditions such as thyroid function, vitamin levels, and more detailed lipid profiles.
- Imaging Tests: Such as chest X-rays or ultrasounds, depending on risk factors.
- Cancer Screenings: Depending on age and gender, this could include mammograms for women, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests for men, or colonoscopies for colorectal cancer screening.
- Specialized Tests: Such as EKGs for heart health or pulmonary function tests for lung health.
Q2: Can general and comprehensive health checkups be covered by health insurance? Are there additional fees?
In many countries, including the U.S., health insurance may cover certain preventive services under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). However, the extent of coverage can vary based on the insurance plan.
- General Health Checkups: Often covered fully by insurance, especially if they are classified as preventive care. However, if additional tests are performed that are not deemed preventive, there may be out-of-pocket costs.
- Comprehensive Health Examinations: These may not be fully covered, especially if they include tests that are considered non-preventive or if they exceed the standard preventive care guidelines. Patients may also encounter co-pays or deductibles.
Q3: What if health checkups cannot be covered by insurance or if the insurance card is not available? What are the estimated costs for self-pay?
If you are unable to use health insurance or do not have your insurance card, you will need to pay out-of-pocket. The costs for health checkups can vary widely based on location, the facility, and the specific tests included.
- General Health Checkup Costs: Typically range from $100 to $300, depending on the tests performed and the facility.
- Comprehensive Health Examination Costs: These can range from $300 to over $1,000, especially if multiple tests and screenings are included.
It's advisable to contact local clinics or hospitals to inquire about their pricing for both general and comprehensive checkups. Many facilities offer packages that can provide a better value for a series of tests.
Conclusion
In summary, understanding the differences between general and comprehensive health checkups is crucial for making informed decisions about your health. While insurance can help cover costs, it's essential to be aware of what is included in your plan and what additional fees may apply. If you are self-paying, researching and comparing prices at different facilities can help you find the best option for your health needs. Always consult with a healthcare provider to determine which tests are appropriate based on your personal health history and risk factors.
