Facial asymmetry after a car accident?
On September 16, I was involved in a car accident, and the doctor diagnosed me with a zygomatic bone fracture.
I underwent surgery in October to reposition the bone, but my face still appears asymmetrical, with one side noticeably larger than the other.
Will this improve? Will it return to its previous size? How should I address this issue?

Dr. Lu Daokuan reply Plastic Surgery
It is possible that a fracture may be so severe that it cannot be completely realigned.
You can consult a craniofacial surgeon for advice.

After a car accident, particularly one that results in facial injuries such as a zygomatic (cheekbone) fracture, it is common to have concerns about the long-term effects on appearance and function. Your question about whether your face will return to normal after such an injury is a valid one, and it involves several factors.
Firstly, it is important to understand that facial swelling and asymmetry are common following trauma. Swelling can persist for weeks or even months after an injury, particularly if there was significant soft tissue damage or if surgery was involved. This swelling can make one side of the face appear larger or different from the other. Over time, as the swelling subsides and the tissues heal, you may notice improvements in symmetry. However, the extent of recovery can vary significantly from person to person.
Regarding your specific situation, since you underwent surgery to reposition the fractured bone, the healing process will play a crucial role in your recovery. The bone itself typically heals within a few weeks to months, but soft tissue healing can take longer. It is essential to follow up with your surgeon or a specialist in facial trauma to monitor the healing process. They may recommend imaging studies, such as a CT scan, to assess the bone's healing and alignment.
In terms of treatment options, if you continue to notice significant asymmetry or if the appearance does not improve over time, you may want to consider consulting with a plastic surgeon or an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. They can evaluate whether additional surgical intervention is necessary to correct any residual deformities or asymmetries. Non-surgical options, such as fillers or other cosmetic procedures, may also be considered to enhance facial symmetry.
As for your concerns about the long-term effects, it is important to note that while some nerve damage can occur with facial injuries, many patients experience significant recovery over time. However, complete restoration of sensation or function may not always be possible. If you are experiencing persistent numbness or tingling, it is essential to discuss this with your healthcare provider, as they can provide guidance on rehabilitation options, such as physical therapy or nerve stimulation therapies.
In the meantime, maintaining a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly calcium and protein, can support your healing process. Staying hydrated and avoiding smoking or excessive alcohol consumption can also promote better recovery outcomes.
In summary, while it is possible for your face to return to a more symmetrical appearance after a car accident injury, the timeline and extent of recovery can vary. Regular follow-ups with your healthcare providers, adherence to their recommendations, and consideration of additional treatments if necessary will be key to achieving the best possible outcome. Remember, healing takes time, and patience is essential during this process.
