Generalized pruritus?
Hello Dr.
Lee: About half a month ago, I started getting woken up in the morning by mosquito bites (it feels like insect bites), and then I couldn't fall back asleep...
I ended up scratching and itching.
As a result, I developed various sized welts on the inner thighs and surrounding areas.
While applying anti-itch medication, I kept scratching furiously...
The more I scratched, the larger the itchy area became.
It was incredibly unbearable and maddening.
After about two hours, it gradually calmed down...
Strangely, this happens every morning between 4 to 6 AM.
It's like I'm in a constant battle with "itching," which has been very painful.
This has been ongoing for over half a month...
I thought it would resolve on its own, but the "itching" continues to persist...
Now, my legs are covered in scars, with skin that is broken and in a very unsightly condition, which I've never experienced before in my life...
Is this what we call "起慶摩" in Taiwanese? I personally suspect that there might be some underlying health issues or other unknown diseases.
I hope to understand the doctor's explanation and guidance before visiting the dermatology clinic.
Thank you!

Hello: Based solely on the textual description, it is not possible to accurately diagnose a skin condition.
"起慶摩" is medically referred to as urticaria, also known as hives.
For more information, you can refer to the article from National Taiwan University Hospital at http://epaper.ntuh.gov.tw/health/201205/special_1_1.html.
If your skin abnormalities persist or worsen, it is advisable to consult a nearby dermatologist for a definitive diagnosis and treatment.

Persistent itching can be a distressing experience, and it sounds like you are dealing with a particularly challenging situation. Based on your description, it appears that you may be experiencing a condition known as pruritus, which is the medical term for itching. This can be caused by a variety of factors, and understanding the underlying causes is crucial for effective treatment.
One common cause of persistent itching is dry skin, especially in colder climates where humidity levels are low. When the skin loses moisture, it can become dry, flaky, and itchy. This is particularly relevant given your recent move to a colder environment, which can exacerbate skin dryness. Additionally, frequent scratching can lead to a cycle of irritation and inflammation, making the itching worse and potentially leading to secondary infections or skin damage.
Another possibility is that you may be experiencing an allergic reaction or sensitivity to something in your environment, such as detergents, soaps, or even insect bites, as you mentioned waking up with what felt like mosquito bites. Allergic reactions can cause localized swelling, redness, and itching, and they can sometimes be persistent if the allergen is not identified and avoided.
In your case, it’s essential to avoid scratching as much as possible, as this can worsen the condition and lead to further skin damage. Instead, consider using topical treatments that can help alleviate the itching. Over-the-counter hydrocortisone creams can be effective for reducing inflammation and itching. Additionally, applying a good moisturizer regularly can help maintain skin hydration and create a barrier against irritants.
If you suspect that your symptoms may be related to an allergic reaction, it may be beneficial to keep a diary of your activities, products used, and any potential allergens encountered. This can help identify triggers that may be contributing to your symptoms.
Since your symptoms have persisted for over a month and have resulted in significant skin damage, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist. A healthcare professional can provide a thorough examination, potentially perform allergy testing, and recommend appropriate treatments tailored to your specific condition. They may also prescribe stronger topical steroids or other medications if necessary.
In terms of prevention, maintaining skin hydration is key. Use gentle, fragrance-free cleansers and moisturizers, and avoid hot showers, which can strip the skin of moisture. Wearing loose-fitting clothing can also help reduce irritation from friction.
In summary, persistent itching can stem from various causes, including dry skin, allergic reactions, or other dermatological conditions. It’s important to avoid scratching, use appropriate topical treatments, and consult a dermatologist for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. By taking these steps, you can work towards alleviating your symptoms and improving your skin health.
