Lower abdominal discomfort or pain?
Recently, I have been experiencing a dull pain in the lower left abdomen, approximately four fingers to the left and three fingers below the navel.
It feels sore when pressed.
I just gave birth a little over four months ago.
Is the dull pain due to the ovaries not having fully recovered, or could it be something else?

Hello: It could potentially involve the small intestine, large intestine, urinary tract, uterus, or ovaries.
It is recommended to first consult a gastroenterologist.
Additionally, try to avoid constipation.

Left lower abdominal pain after childbirth can be concerning for new mothers, especially when it occurs several months postpartum. Understanding the potential causes and implications of this pain is crucial for proper management and reassurance.
Firstly, it is essential to recognize that the body undergoes significant changes during and after pregnancy. The uterus, which expands to accommodate the growing fetus, takes time to return to its pre-pregnancy size and position. This process, known as involution, can sometimes lead to discomfort or pain in the lower abdomen. Additionally, hormonal changes can affect the ovaries and menstrual cycle, potentially causing pain related to ovulation or other ovarian functions.
In your case, the pain you describe as being located about four fingers below the navel and to the left could be attributed to several factors:
1. Ovarian Activity: After childbirth, the ovaries may still be adjusting, especially if you are breastfeeding, which can suppress ovulation. Pain in this area could be related to ovarian cysts or the release of an egg during ovulation. If you are experiencing sharp or severe pain, it may warrant further investigation.
2. Scar Tissue and Adhesions: If you had a cesarean section or any other abdominal surgery, scar tissue (adhesions) could form, leading to discomfort. These adhesions can cause pain when the surrounding organs move or if there is any inflammation.
3. Pelvic Floor Dysfunction: The pelvic floor muscles can become weakened or strained during childbirth, leading to pain or discomfort in the lower abdomen. This can be exacerbated by activities such as lifting or carrying your baby.
4. Infection: Although less common, postpartum infections can occur, particularly if there were any complications during delivery. Signs of infection may include fever, unusual discharge, or worsening pain.
5. Gastrointestinal Issues: Sometimes, abdominal pain can be related to gastrointestinal problems, such as constipation or gas, which can be common after childbirth due to hormonal changes and dietary adjustments.
6. Endometriosis or Other Gynecological Conditions: If the pain persists or worsens, it could be indicative of conditions such as endometriosis, which can cause significant pain and discomfort.
Given these possibilities, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They may recommend a physical examination, imaging studies (like an ultrasound), or blood tests to rule out any serious conditions.
In the meantime, consider the following self-care measures:
- Rest: Ensure you are getting adequate rest, as fatigue can exacerbate pain perception.
- Gentle Exercise: Engage in light physical activity, such as walking or postpartum yoga, to promote circulation and healing.
- Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help manage discomfort, but consult your doctor before taking any medication.
- Hydration and Diet: Maintain a balanced diet and stay hydrated to support recovery and gastrointestinal health.
In conclusion, while left lower abdominal pain after childbirth can be common, it is essential to monitor the symptoms and seek medical advice if the pain persists or worsens. Early intervention can help address any underlying issues and provide peace of mind as you navigate the postpartum period.
