Minor knee injury after a car accident?
Around mid-April, after a car accident, I sustained a bruise on my left knee.
However, the wound on my knee is small and not extensive.
The other parts of the knee have healed, but there is a small raised area at the site of the injury near the bone, which appears dark purple-red in color.
It still hurts quite a bit if I accidentally bump it.
I would like to know why this is happening.
If I need to go to the hospital for an examination, which department should I visit? Thank you!

More Info
After a car accident, knee injuries can manifest in various ways, and understanding the underlying causes is crucial for effective treatment. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing localized pain and discoloration in a specific area of your knee, which could indicate several potential issues.
Possible Causes of Your Symptoms
1. Soft Tissue Injury: The bruising and localized pain you describe could be due to soft tissue injuries, such as contusions or strains. These injuries can occur when the knee impacts a hard surface or is subjected to sudden force, leading to bleeding under the skin (bruising) and swelling.
2. Bone Contusion or Fracture: The "bump" you mentioned could be a bone contusion, which is a bruise on the bone itself. If the injury was severe enough, it might also lead to a small fracture that may not have been detected initially. This could explain the persistent pain and sensitivity in that area.
3. Knee Joint Issues: Given that the injury is near the bone, there could be involvement of the knee joint structures, including cartilage damage or ligament strain. These injuries can lead to instability and pain, especially during movement.
4. Post-Traumatic Arthritis: Sometimes, injuries can lead to inflammation in the joint, resulting in post-traumatic arthritis. This condition can develop over time and cause chronic pain and stiffness.
When to Seek Medical Help
It is advisable to seek medical attention if you experience any of the following:
- Persistent or worsening pain that does not improve with rest or over-the-counter pain medications.
- Swelling that does not subside after a few days.
- Difficulty in bending or straightening the knee.
- Any signs of infection, such as increased redness, warmth, or discharge from the wound.
- If you notice that the knee feels unstable or gives way during movement.
Recommended Medical Specialties
For your specific situation, you should consider visiting an orthopedic specialist. Orthopedic doctors specialize in musculoskeletal injuries, including those affecting bones, joints, ligaments, and tendons. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including imaging studies like X-rays or MRIs, to assess the extent of your injury.
Additionally, if there is significant swelling or if you suspect a soft tissue injury, a visit to a sports medicine physician or a physiatrist (rehabilitation specialist) may also be beneficial. They can provide a comprehensive approach to managing pain and developing a rehabilitation plan.
Conclusion
In summary, the symptoms you are experiencing after your car accident could be due to various factors, including soft tissue injuries, bone contusions, or joint issues. It is essential to monitor your symptoms closely and seek medical evaluation from an orthopedic specialist to determine the exact cause and appropriate treatment. Early intervention can significantly improve your recovery and help prevent long-term complications. Remember to rest the affected knee, apply ice to reduce swelling, and avoid activities that exacerbate the pain until you can get a professional assessment.
