Sudden Redness on the Glans: Causes and Solutions - Urology

Glans issue: The glans, which was originally a normal purplish-red color, suddenly developed a patch of blood-red color?

When cleaning the glans during bathing, I’m not sure if I applied too much pressure or if it’s an allergic reaction.
After rinsing, a small area on the glans suddenly appeared red.
Initially, it didn’t hurt when I touched that red area, but later it started to hurt a little.
Doctor, what will happen if I don’t seek medical attention? How can I improve this? I clean it every day, and I haven’t had any surgery on the foreskin.

Hello, sir: Issues with the skin in the perineal area are difficult to address through online consultations.
Please visit the outpatient clinic for a personal diagnosis by a physician.

Sudden redness on the glans, especially after cleaning, can be concerning and may arise from several causes. Based on your description, it seems that you may have experienced irritation or a mild injury to the glans, possibly due to excessive cleaning or an allergic reaction to a soap or cleaning product. Here’s a detailed breakdown of potential causes and solutions:

Potential Causes:
1. Mechanical Irritation: If you scrubbed the area too vigorously while cleaning, it could lead to irritation or micro-abrasions on the sensitive skin of the glans. This can cause redness and discomfort.

2. Allergic Reaction: Sometimes, soaps, detergents, or even certain fabrics can cause allergic reactions. If you recently changed your soap or used a new product, this could be the culprit.

3. Infection: While less likely given your description, infections such as balanitis (inflammation of the glans) can cause redness and discomfort. This is often accompanied by other symptoms like swelling, discharge, or a foul odor.

4. Dermatitis: Contact dermatitis can occur from exposure to irritants or allergens, leading to redness and discomfort.

5. Fungal or Bacterial Infections: These can also cause redness and irritation, especially if there is an underlying condition such as diabetes or if hygiene practices are inconsistent.

Recommendations for Improvement:
1. Gentle Cleaning: When cleaning the area, use mild, unscented soap and avoid scrubbing too hard. Rinse thoroughly to ensure no soap residue remains, as this can irritate the skin.

2. Avoid Irritants: If you suspect an allergic reaction, try to identify and avoid any new products you’ve used recently. Stick to hypoallergenic products.

3. Moisturize: If the area feels dry or irritated, applying a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer can help soothe the skin. However, avoid applying anything if you suspect an infection.

4. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on the redness. If it persists, worsens, or if you develop additional symptoms such as pain, swelling, discharge, or fever, it’s essential to seek medical attention.

5. Avoid Sexual Activity: Until the area has healed, it may be wise to avoid sexual activity to prevent further irritation or potential transmission of infections.

When to Seek Medical Attention:
If the redness does not improve within a few days, or if you experience increasing pain, swelling, or any discharge, it’s crucial to consult a healthcare professional. They can provide a proper diagnosis and treatment plan, which may include topical medications or further evaluation for infections.

Conclusion:
While it’s understandable to be concerned about sudden changes in your body, many cases of irritation can resolve with proper care and attention. Maintaining good hygiene, avoiding irritants, and being gentle during cleaning can significantly reduce the risk of further issues. However, don’t hesitate to seek medical advice if symptoms persist or worsen, as early intervention can prevent complications.
