Tooth extraction?
This morning, I just had my upper right molar extracted.
Tonight, I noticed that the area behind the extracted molar, where my wisdom tooth is located, along with the surrounding tissue, is painful.
Is this normal?

Dr. Lin Jiayong reply Dentistry
Hello: Since tooth extraction is a type of surgical procedure, there will be an open wound, and the area around the extraction site will likely experience temporary discomfort, with the longest observation period potentially lasting up to six months.
If you still have concerns, it is advisable to visit a large medical institution for a detailed examination.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

Experiencing pain near the site of a wisdom tooth extraction is not uncommon and can be considered a normal part of the healing process. After the extraction of a tooth, especially a wisdom tooth, the surrounding tissues, including the gums and adjacent teeth, may experience inflammation and discomfort. This is due to the trauma inflicted during the extraction procedure, which can lead to swelling and soreness in the area.
When a wisdom tooth is removed, the body initiates a healing response, which includes increased blood flow to the area, swelling, and sometimes bruising. This can result in pain that radiates to nearby teeth and tissues. It is also important to note that the extraction site may be sensitive to temperature changes, such as hot or cold food and beverages, which can exacerbate the sensation of pain.
In your case, since you mentioned that the pain is localized around the wisdom tooth and the adjacent gum tissue, it is likely a result of the surgical trauma. However, if the pain persists or worsens over the next few days, it could indicate a potential complication, such as dry socket (alveolar osteitis), infection, or damage to adjacent teeth or nerves. Dry socket occurs when the blood clot that forms in the extraction site becomes dislodged or dissolves, exposing the underlying bone and nerves, leading to significant pain.
To manage the pain and promote healing, it is essential to follow your dentist's post-operative care instructions. This may include:
1. Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help alleviate discomfort. Always follow the recommended dosage and consult your dentist if you have any concerns.
2. Ice Packs: Applying ice packs to the outside of your cheek for the first 24 hours can help reduce swelling and numb the area, providing relief from pain.
3. Soft Foods: Stick to a diet of soft foods and avoid anything too hot, cold, or hard that could irritate the extraction site.
4. Oral Hygiene: Maintain good oral hygiene, but be gentle around the extraction site. Avoid vigorous rinsing or spitting for the first few days to prevent dislodging the blood clot.
5. Follow-Up Appointments: Attend any scheduled follow-up appointments with your dentist to ensure proper healing and address any concerns.
If you experience severe pain, swelling that does not subside, fever, or any unusual discharge from the extraction site, it is crucial to contact your dentist promptly. They may need to evaluate the area to rule out any complications.
In summary, while some discomfort after wisdom tooth extraction is normal, it is essential to monitor your symptoms and seek professional advice if you have any concerns about your recovery. Your dentist is the best resource for addressing specific issues related to your dental health and ensuring a smooth healing process.
