Brown Discharge with Blood Strands: What Could It Mean? - Obstetrics and Gynecology

The discharge is brownish with blood streaks and has persisted for five days. There is no pain or discomfort, and there has been no sexual intercourse?

Hello, Doctor! I am currently a student and I'm not sure how long this situation has been going on, but I feel it has persisted long enough to make me concerned.
My last menstrual period was from June 8 to June 14, and my next expected period is July 12 (according to my mobile app).
Currently, I am experiencing unusual discharge that is different in color than usual—it's somewhat brown with a bit of red streaks (the brown is more prominent than the blood streaks).
There is no pain, and the odor seems the same as before (a bit fishy).
I have not engaged in sexual intercourse, and my last instance of masturbation was a week ago (with the use of a device).
Normally, I have a tendency to have increased discharge and I used to habitually use panty liners (though I am gradually stopping this, as I know it's not good).
I am worried that this might be due to an injury from masturbation or perhaps due to stress (I just finished my school application interview yesterday).
Thank you for your help!

Brown discharge with blood strands can be concerning, especially when it deviates from your usual menstrual cycle. Based on the details you've provided, there are several potential explanations for this symptom.

Firstly, brown discharge often indicates old blood that has taken longer to exit the body. This can happen at the beginning or end of a menstrual period, as the body sheds the uterine lining. Given that your last menstrual period was from June 8 to June 14, it's possible that the brown discharge you're experiencing is simply a result of leftover blood from your last cycle. The presence of red blood strands could indicate that some fresh blood is also being released, which can happen if there is slight irritation or hormonal fluctuations.

Hormonal changes can lead to variations in your menstrual cycle and discharge. Stress, as you mentioned, can significantly impact your hormonal balance. The pressure from school applications and interviews can lead to increased levels of cortisol, which may affect your menstrual cycle and cause changes in discharge.
Another possibility is that the discharge could be related to ovulation, which typically occurs about two weeks before your next expected period. Some women experience spotting or brown discharge during ovulation due to the hormonal changes that occur at this time.
Regarding your concern about potential injury from masturbation, while it is generally safe, any vigorous activity can lead to minor irritation or trauma to the vaginal walls, which could result in light bleeding or unusual discharge. If you notice any pain, discomfort, or significant changes in your discharge, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional.

In terms of the odor you mentioned, a slight fishy smell can be normal, but if it becomes strong or unpleasant, it could indicate an infection, such as bacterial vaginosis or a sexually transmitted infection (STI). However, since you mentioned that you have not engaged in sexual intercourse, the risk of STIs is lower, but it's still important to be aware of any changes in odor or discharge.

To summarize, the brown discharge with blood strands could be due to leftover menstrual blood, hormonal fluctuations due to stress, or minor irritation. If the discharge persists, changes in color or odor, or if you experience any pain or discomfort, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough examination and provide appropriate guidance based on your specific situation.

In conclusion, while occasional changes in discharge can be normal, it’s essential to monitor your symptoms and consult a healthcare professional if you have any concerns. Your health and well-being are important, and getting a professional opinion can provide peace of mind.
