Secretions issues?

My last menstrual period was from June 21 to June 28.
I had sexual intercourse on June 27, but we used a condom.
However, my period has not arrived, and I am experiencing a discharge that resembles blood, with a brownish-red color.
I also have some pain while urinating and itching.
I'm not sure if this is due to a recurrence of a urinary tract infection or if there are other reasons.

Ping, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/07/10

Dr. Huang Yiwen reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Engaging in sexual activity during menstruation increases the risk of infection, regardless of whether a condom is used.
Your symptoms may suggest acute cystitis, urethritis, vaginitis, or cervicitis.
It is advisable to seek medical attention for an examination as soon as possible.

Abnormal discharge, particularly when it presents as blood-tinged or brownish discharge outside of your menstrual cycle, can be concerning for many women. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a few symptoms: abnormal discharge, mild pain during urination, and itching. These symptoms can be indicative of several conditions, and it's essential to understand the potential causes and seek appropriate medical advice.

Firstly, the presence of blood-tinged discharge outside of your menstrual period can be attributed to several factors. One common cause is ovulation bleeding, which occurs when the ovary releases an egg. This can sometimes cause a small amount of bleeding due to the hormonal fluctuations that occur during this time. However, since you mentioned that you had sexual intercourse on June 27 and are now experiencing these symptoms, it is also important to consider other possibilities.

Another potential cause of your symptoms could be a urinary tract infection (UTI). UTIs can lead to symptoms such as painful urination, increased urgency to urinate, and sometimes even blood in the urine or discharge. The itching you are experiencing could also suggest a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis, both of which can cause abnormal discharge and discomfort.

It is also worth considering the possibility of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), especially if there has been any unprotected sexual contact. Some STIs can present with abnormal discharge, itching, and pain during urination. Conditions such as chlamydia or gonorrhea can lead to similar symptoms and should be ruled out.

Given your symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough examination, including a pelvic exam and possibly laboratory tests, to determine the exact cause of your symptoms. They may conduct a urinalysis to check for a UTI and perform a swab to test for STIs or other infections.

In the meantime, here are some general recommendations:
1. Avoid Irritants: Refrain from using scented soaps, douches, or other products that may irritate the vaginal area.

2. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help flush out your urinary system and may alleviate some discomfort if a UTI is present.

3. Practice Safe Sex: Always use protection during sexual intercourse to reduce the risk of STIs and unintended pregnancies.

4. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your symptoms, including the color and consistency of the discharge, as well as any additional symptoms that may arise.

5. Seek Medical Attention: If your symptoms persist or worsen, or if you develop a fever, chills, or severe pain, it is essential to seek medical care promptly.

In conclusion, while some causes of abnormal discharge can be benign, it is vital to consult with a healthcare professional to rule out any serious conditions and receive appropriate treatment. Your health and well-being are paramount, and addressing these symptoms early can lead to better outcomes.
