Delayed menstruation?

This month, my period is expected on July 9th.
I had intercourse with my boyfriend on June 29th, and we used a condom throughout.
However, my period is now 3 days late.
I took a pregnancy test yesterday (14 days after intercourse), and it showed one line.
I have also been tracking my basal body temperature, which has been around 36.2 to 36.3 degrees Celsius.
Recently, I have been experiencing some lower abdominal discomfort and breast tenderness, which feels like my period is about to start.
Can I rule out the possibility of pregnancy?

Miss Yang, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/07/12

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, a pregnancy test is usually reliable after 12 days of conception.
If the test shows one line, the chances of being pregnant are low.
If your period does not arrive after another week, it is advisable to see a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

Understanding delayed periods can be a source of anxiety for many individuals, especially when considering the possibility of pregnancy. In your case, you mentioned that your expected period was on July 9, and you had unprotected intercourse on June 29, using a condom. As of now, you are three days late, and you have taken a pregnancy test that returned negative. You also noted some physical symptoms such as lower abdominal discomfort and breast tenderness, which can often accompany the menstrual cycle.

First and foremost, it is important to understand that a delayed period does not automatically indicate pregnancy. While a missed period is one of the most common early signs of pregnancy, there are numerous factors that can contribute to menstrual irregularities. Stress, hormonal imbalances, changes in weight, and lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise can all impact your menstrual cycle. Given that you are experiencing some stress, especially if you are preparing for exams or facing other life pressures, this could certainly be a contributing factor to your delayed period.

The fact that you used a condom during intercourse significantly reduces the likelihood of pregnancy, as condoms are an effective form of contraception when used correctly. However, no contraceptive method is 100% effective, and there is always a small chance of failure. The negative pregnancy test you took is also a reassuring sign, especially since it was taken 14 days after intercourse, which is typically when a test can reliably detect pregnancy if it has occurred.

Your symptoms of lower abdominal discomfort and breast tenderness can be indicative of an impending menstrual period. Many individuals experience premenstrual syndrome (PMS), which can include a variety of symptoms such as bloating, breast tenderness, mood swings, and abdominal cramps. These symptoms can sometimes mimic early pregnancy signs, making it difficult to differentiate between the two without a pregnancy test.

If your period does not arrive within the next few days, it may be wise to take another pregnancy test or consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation. They can help determine if there are underlying issues affecting your menstrual cycle, such as hormonal imbalances or other health concerns.

In summary, while a delayed period can raise concerns about pregnancy, it is essential to consider all potential factors that could contribute to menstrual irregularities. Given your use of condoms, the negative pregnancy test, and the timing of your symptoms, it is likely that your period may arrive soon. However, if you continue to experience delays or have concerns about your menstrual health, seeking medical advice is always a prudent step. Remember to take care of your mental and physical health during this time, as stress can significantly impact your overall well-being and menstrual cycle.
