Knee issues. Elbow issues?
Since around middle school, I have had pain in my knees when squatting, but I have no issues walking, sitting, or exercising.
I have not experienced any fractures or serious injuries, and I cannot touch my shoulders, but again, I have not had any fractures or serious injuries.

Knee joint issues may be related to the patella, and insufficient flexion of the elbow joint should also be evaluated by a physician.

More Info
Knee and elbow pain can be common issues that many people experience, and understanding the underlying causes can help in managing and alleviating these symptoms. Based on your description, it seems that you have been experiencing knee pain primarily when squatting, while other activities such as walking, sitting, and exercising do not provoke discomfort. This pattern of pain can provide valuable insights into the potential causes.
Common Causes of Knee Pain
1. Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS): This condition is often characterized by pain around the kneecap (patella) and is commonly seen in individuals who engage in activities that involve bending the knee, such as squatting. It can occur due to muscle imbalances, overuse, or improper alignment of the kneecap.
2. Tendinitis: Inflammation of the tendons around the knee, such as patellar tendinitis (jumper's knee), can cause pain during activities that involve bending the knee. This is often seen in athletes or individuals who engage in repetitive activities.
3. Meniscus Tear: Although you mentioned no history of severe injury, sometimes minor tears can occur without a significant event. A meniscus tear can cause pain, especially when squatting or twisting the knee.
4. Osteoarthritis: While more common in older adults, early signs of osteoarthritis can present as pain during specific movements, particularly if there is a history of joint stress or overuse.
5. Bursitis: Inflammation of the bursae (small fluid-filled sacs that cushion the knee joint) can lead to localized pain, especially when bending the knee.
Common Causes of Elbow Pain
1. Tendinitis: Similar to the knee, tendinitis can occur in the elbow, particularly in the form of tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) or golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis). These conditions arise from repetitive motions that strain the tendons.
2. Cubital Tunnel Syndrome: This condition occurs when the ulnar nerve is compressed at the elbow, leading to pain, tingling, or numbness in the elbow and down the arm.
3. Arthritis: Osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis can affect the elbow, causing pain, stiffness, and swelling.
4. Ligament Injuries: While you mentioned no significant injuries, minor strains or sprains can occur, especially if there is repetitive stress on the elbow.
Management and Treatment
For both knee and elbow pain, the following strategies may help alleviate symptoms:
1. Rest and Activity Modification: Avoid activities that exacerbate the pain, particularly squatting for the knee and repetitive motions for the elbow.
2. Physical Therapy: A physical therapist can provide exercises to strengthen the muscles around the knee and elbow, improve flexibility, and correct any biomechanical issues.
3. Ice and Heat Therapy: Applying ice to the affected area can reduce inflammation, while heat can help relax and soothe tight muscles.
4. Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen can help manage pain and reduce inflammation.
5. Bracing or Support: Using a knee brace or elbow support can provide stability and reduce strain during activities.
6. Gradual Return to Activity: Once symptoms improve, gradually reintroducing activities can help prevent recurrence.
When to Seek Medical Attention
If your symptoms persist or worsen, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. They may recommend imaging studies such as X-rays or MRI to assess for any underlying structural issues. A thorough evaluation can help determine the best course of treatment tailored to your specific condition.
In summary, while knee and elbow pain can be bothersome, understanding the potential causes and implementing appropriate management strategies can significantly improve your quality of life. Always listen to your body and seek professional guidance when needed.
