Symptoms after hemorrhoidectomy?

Hello Doctor, I had surgery on July 13, and it has been four days since then.
My surgery was for a hemorrhoidectomy for mixed hemorrhoids.
Since the second day after I was allowed to use the restroom, I have been feeling the urge to go to the bathroom every day, nearly 7 to 8 times a day.
The most frequent issue is excessive flatulence, and the amount is quite significant.
I constantly feel bloated, and just passing gas causes bleeding.
Not to mention, when I have a bowel movement, there is also blood.
I feel like I cannot urinate alone; every time I go to the restroom, I end up sitting on the toilet for both urination and defecation.
The doctor mentioned that I would be better in about a week, but now that it has been four days, I don't feel much improvement.
P.S.
I have been taking stool softeners regularly.

The surgical wound from hemorrhoid surgery typically takes about two to three weeks to heal, during which symptoms such as bleeding, pain, and changes in bowel habits will show significant improvement.

After undergoing a hemorrhoidectomy, it is not uncommon for patients to experience a variety of symptoms as part of the recovery process. Your experience of frequent urges to use the restroom, increased flatulence, abdominal bloating, and the presence of blood during bowel movements can be concerning, but they are not entirely unexpected following this type of surgery.

Firstly, it is important to understand that hemorrhoidectomy is a surgical procedure aimed at removing hemorrhoids, which can be quite painful and lead to significant discomfort during the recovery phase. The surgical site is sensitive, and as it heals, it can cause various symptoms, including those you are experiencing.

1. Increased Urgency and Frequency: After surgery, it is common for patients to feel an increased urgency to have bowel movements. This can be due to several factors, including swelling in the anal area, changes in bowel habits, or even anxiety about bowel movements following surgery. The sensation of needing to go frequently can also be exacerbated by the use of stool softeners, which can lead to more frequent but softer stools.

2. Flatulence and Bloating: The presence of gas and bloating is also a common post-operative symptom. After surgery, your digestive system may take some time to return to normal function. Additionally, if you are consuming a diet high in fiber or taking stool softeners, this can lead to increased gas production. It is essential to monitor your diet and consider reducing foods that may contribute to gas, such as beans, carbonated beverages, and certain vegetables.

3. Bleeding: The presence of blood during bowel movements, especially after a hemorrhoidectomy, can be alarming. Some bleeding is expected as the surgical site heals, particularly if you are straining during bowel movements. However, if the bleeding is significant or persists, it is crucial to contact your healthcare provider. They may want to assess the surgical site to ensure there are no complications, such as infection or excessive irritation.

4. Pain Management: Pain and discomfort are also common after this type of surgery. If you are experiencing significant pain, it is essential to discuss this with your doctor. They may recommend pain management strategies, including medications or topical treatments to ease discomfort.

5. Dietary Considerations: Since you mentioned taking stool softeners, it is vital to maintain a balanced diet that promotes regular bowel movements without causing straining. Incorporating high-fiber foods, staying hydrated, and possibly using a fiber supplement can help. However, be cautious with the amount of fiber you consume, as too much can also lead to gas and bloating.

6. Follow-Up Care: Given that you are only four days post-surgery, it is still early in the recovery process. Many patients find that their symptoms gradually improve over the course of a few weeks. However, if you do not notice any improvement or if your symptoms worsen, it is essential to follow up with your surgeon or healthcare provider. They can provide guidance tailored to your specific situation and may recommend further evaluation or treatment.

In summary, while your symptoms are not uncommon following a hemorrhoidectomy, it is crucial to monitor them closely. Ensure you maintain open communication with your healthcare provider about your recovery progress and any concerns you may have. They are best equipped to provide you with the necessary support and interventions to facilitate your healing process.
