Blurred vision in the right eye?

Doctor, I just had PRK laser surgery for my myopia a week ago.
I feel that my left eye is seeing very clearly, but my right eye is a bit blurry.
Is this a normal phenomenon?

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology

Hello, Pudding: It is possible that there is still some residual refraction, or the cornea has not fully healed.
A clinical examination is necessary to determine if everything is normal.
In Taiwan, the ophthalmology department at Puzi Hospital is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and Wednesday afternoons from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM.
Online responses can only serve as a reference; it is essential to seek medical care at a healthcare facility if needed.
I hope to have the opportunity to assist you.

Experiencing blurry vision in one eye after undergoing PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) surgery is not uncommon, especially within the first week post-operation. It is essential to understand that the healing process after laser eye surgery can vary significantly from person to person. While one eye may heal faster and achieve clearer vision, the other eye may take longer to stabilize, leading to temporary visual discrepancies.

In your case, where the left eye is seeing clearly while the right eye remains somewhat blurry, several factors could be at play. One possibility is that there may be residual refractive error in the right eye. This means that the laser treatment may not have fully corrected the vision in that eye, which can result in blurred vision. Additionally, the healing process of the cornea can also contribute to visual changes. After PRK, the cornea undergoes a healing phase where it may swell or experience irregularities, which can affect vision clarity.

Another common issue that can lead to blurry vision post-PRK is corneal haze or edema (swelling). This is particularly relevant in the early stages of recovery, as the corneal cells regenerate and the surface of the eye heals. The presence of any swelling can temporarily distort vision, leading to blurriness. It is also worth noting that the eyes may react differently to the surgery due to individual anatomical differences, pre-existing conditions, or variations in healing responses.

It is crucial to follow up with your eye care professional for a thorough examination. They can assess whether the blurriness is a normal part of the healing process or if further intervention is needed. They may perform tests to check for residual refractive error, corneal health, and overall eye condition. If the blurriness persists beyond the expected healing time or worsens, it is essential to seek medical advice promptly.

In the meantime, ensure you are adhering to all post-operative care instructions provided by your surgeon. This may include using prescribed eye drops to reduce inflammation and prevent infection, as well as avoiding activities that could strain your eyes, such as excessive screen time or exposure to bright lights.

In summary, while it is not unusual to experience blurry vision in one eye after PRK surgery, especially within the first week, it is essential to monitor the situation closely and maintain open communication with your eye care provider. They can provide the best guidance tailored to your specific circumstances and ensure that your recovery proceeds as smoothly as possible. Remember, patience is key during the healing process, and many patients find that their vision continues to improve over the weeks following surgery.

Hello Lily: The reason for re-scraping the cornea and performing laser treatment is to remove the scar and improve vision. PRK is less likely to cause dry eyes and is unrelated to floaters. The "caterpillar" phenomenon is likely a manifestation of floaters.
