Blurred vision in one eye after laser surgery for myopia?

Hello Doctor, about 10 days after my laser eye surgery for my myopia, I noticed while applying my eye drops that I cannot see the subtitles on the television with my right eye at all.
Since I usually watch with both eyes, I hadn't paid special attention to this issue.
To clarify, when I cover one eye, I can see large objects from about three steps away with my right eye, but I cannot clearly see letters or small objects, and the edges of objects do not appear sharp or three-dimensional; it feels similar to how it was when I was nearsighted.
However, during my follow-up appointment, the doctor measured my vision and said both eyes are 1.0, which is a bit unclear, so I don't understand how this could be the case.
I am currently continuing my medication, but after five days of observation, my left eye is clear while my right eye remains unclear.
Is this a regression in my prescription? I kindly ask for your response.
Thank you.

Dear Miss Wu,
There are many reasons for unclear vision after surgery, but I am unsure why you can still see to 1.0.
It may be that you can see, but the image quality is not as good.
If that is the case, there might still be some refractive error present.
A refraction test will clarify this.
Laser surgery does not guarantee 100% clarity, and the results may not be identical in both eyes.
If there are no significant complications from the surgery, it is possible that your vision may gradually improve, or it may remain as it is.

Without any examination reports or clinical evaluations, I cannot speculate on other potential causes.
It would be best to consult your surgeon for further information.

Post-LASIK vision issues can be concerning, especially when one eye seems to be experiencing blurry vision after surgery. It’s important to understand that LASIK surgery, while generally safe and effective, can lead to a variety of visual outcomes, and individual experiences may vary significantly.

Firstly, it’s not uncommon for patients to experience differences in vision between their eyes after LASIK. This can be due to several factors, including the healing process, the degree of correction achieved, and even pre-existing conditions that may not have been fully addressed during the surgery. In your case, the fact that you are noticing significant differences in clarity, especially with small text, suggests that there may be an issue that needs further evaluation.

The fact that your doctor measured both eyes at 1.0 (which typically indicates good vision) but you are still experiencing blurriness in your right eye raises a few possibilities. One potential explanation could be that while the overall refractive error has been corrected, there may still be residual refractive error or astigmatism that was not fully addressed. This can happen if the corneal flap created during LASIK does not heal perfectly or if the cornea has irregularities post-surgery.

Another possibility is that you might be experiencing a condition known as "dry eye," which is common after LASIK. Dry eye can lead to fluctuating vision and can make it difficult to focus clearly, especially on small text. If your right eye is drier than your left, this could explain the difference in clarity. It’s essential to continue using any prescribed artificial tears or lubricating eye drops to help manage this condition.

Additionally, it’s important to consider the healing process itself. The cornea takes time to stabilize after LASIK, and visual acuity can fluctuate during this period. It’s not unusual for patients to notice improvements or changes in their vision over the weeks and months following surgery. If your right eye is still healing, it may take additional time for your vision to fully stabilize.

Regarding the concern about "degree regression," it is possible for some patients to experience a return of myopia (nearsightedness) after LASIK, particularly if they were younger at the time of surgery or if their prescription was particularly high. However, this typically occurs over a longer period rather than just a few days post-surgery.

Given your symptoms, it would be advisable to follow up with your ophthalmologist. They may want to perform a thorough examination, including checking for any residual refractive error, assessing the health of your cornea, and evaluating for dry eye syndrome. If necessary, they may recommend additional treatments, such as prescription eye drops for dry eyes or even a touch-up LASIK procedure if residual refractive error is identified.

In summary, while it’s concerning to experience blurry vision in one eye after LASIK, there are several potential explanations, and many of them are manageable. It’s crucial to maintain open communication with your eye care provider and to report any changes in your vision promptly. They are best equipped to guide you through this recovery process and to ensure that you achieve the best possible visual outcome.
