LASIK Complications: Blurry Vision After Surgery - Ophthalmology

Post-operative complications of LASIK surgery?

Dear Doctor,
I am Weibor.
It has been nearly four months since I underwent LASIK surgery.
My vision for near objects becomes blurry after about 5-10 minutes, while my distance vision is also unclear.
I am concerned that this may be due to an irregular cornea or folds in the surgical flap.
Could these conditions cause the symptoms I am experiencing? Will this situation improve, and what solutions are available? Additionally, aside from lifting the corneal flap, could there be internal folds forming after the gas is absorbed?
Thank you.
Best regards,
Weibor

Subject: Presbyopia After LASIK.
Explanation: Based on your description, it is possible that excessive correction of myopia has resulted in slight hyperopia, leading to early onset of presbyopic symptoms.
A simple refraction test can clarify this.
If this is indeed the case, you may wait for a while to see if the hyperopia gradually resolves.
It is advisable to discuss this with your surgeon.

Dear Weibor,
Thank you for your inquiry regarding your post-LASIK experience. It's understandable to have concerns after undergoing such a significant procedure, especially when experiencing blurry vision. Let's delve into your situation and address your concerns.

Firstly, it is not uncommon for patients to experience blurry vision after LASIK surgery, particularly within the first few months post-operation. This can be attributed to several factors, including the healing process of the cornea, fluctuations in vision, and potential complications that may arise. In your case, the symptoms of blurred vision when looking at objects both near and far, especially after a short duration, could indicate a few possibilities.

1. Corneal Healing: After LASIK, the corneal flap created during the procedure needs time to heal. While the corneal epithelium typically heals within a few days, the underlying layers may take longer to stabilize. During this healing phase, patients may experience fluctuations in vision, including blurriness. If the cornea is uneven or if there are folds (or "wrinkles") in the flap, this can lead to distorted vision.
2. Dry Eye Syndrome: Many LASIK patients experience dry eyes post-surgery due to the temporary disruption of corneal nerves that help regulate tear production. Dry eyes can significantly affect visual clarity, leading to symptoms such as blurriness, especially when focusing on near objects. If you have a history of dry eye, it may have worsened after the surgery, contributing to your symptoms.

3. Overcorrection or Undercorrection: Sometimes, LASIK can result in overcorrection (leading to hyperopia) or undercorrection (remaining myopia). This can manifest as blurred vision at various distances. If your vision was stable before surgery, and you are now experiencing these issues, it might be worth discussing with your surgeon the possibility of a refractive error that needs addressing.

4. Potential Complications: While serious complications from LASIK are rare, they can occur. Issues such as corneal ectasia (thinning and bulging of the cornea) or irregular astigmatism can lead to significant visual disturbances. If you suspect that your symptoms may be due to such complications, it is crucial to consult your ophthalmologist for a thorough examination.

Regarding your question about whether these symptoms will improve, many patients find that their vision stabilizes over time as the cornea heals and any temporary effects of dry eye diminish. However, if your symptoms persist or worsen, it is essential to seek further evaluation from your eye care provider. They may recommend treatments such as artificial tears for dry eyes, or in some cases, additional procedures to correct any refractive errors or address complications.

In summary, while blurry vision after LASIK can be concerning, it is not uncommon, especially in the initial months following surgery. Factors such as corneal healing, dry eye syndrome, and potential refractive errors can all contribute to your experience. I recommend scheduling a follow-up appointment with your surgeon to discuss your symptoms in detail and explore potential solutions tailored to your needs.
