Pimples on the nipple?
Hello Doctor, a few weeks ago I noticed a bump on my right nipple that felt a bit painful, and when I squeezed it, there was some blood and a substance that looked like the color of the bump.
It eventually healed.
However, today another similar bump has appeared on the right nipple! When I squeezed it, a small hard substance came out...
Could you please tell me what this is? Thank you!

It sounds like you are experiencing a concerning issue with your nipple, specifically the appearance of painful pimples that seem to have a discharge. While I cannot provide a diagnosis without a physical examination, I can offer some insights into potential causes and considerations regarding your symptoms.
The presence of painful pimples on the nipple can be attributed to several factors. One common cause is a condition known as Montgomery glands, which are sebaceous glands located around the areola. These glands can become clogged or inflamed, leading to the formation of small, pimple-like bumps that may be tender or painful. If these bumps become infected, they can produce discharge that may be bloody or pus-like.
Another possibility is folliculitis, which is the inflammation of hair follicles. This can occur due to irritation, friction from clothing, or even bacterial infections. If you have been wearing tight clothing or have experienced any trauma to the area, this could contribute to the development of these painful bumps.
In some cases, the appearance of a pimple-like lesion on the nipple could be related to dermatological conditions such as eczema or psoriasis, which can affect the skin of the nipple and areola. These conditions can cause redness, irritation, and sometimes discharge.
It is also important to consider the possibility of ductal issues. The milk ducts can become blocked or infected, leading to conditions such as periductal mastitis. This condition is characterized by inflammation of the ducts beneath the nipple and can result in pain, swelling, and discharge.
Given that you mentioned the bumps have appeared multiple times and have caused you discomfort, it is essential to seek medical attention. A healthcare professional can perform a thorough examination, possibly including imaging studies or cultures of the discharge, to determine the exact cause of your symptoms. They may also assess for any signs of infection or other underlying conditions that could require treatment.
In the meantime, here are some general recommendations:
1. Avoid squeezing or picking at the bumps, as this can lead to further irritation or infection.
2. Maintain good hygiene in the area, but avoid harsh soaps or irritants that could exacerbate the condition.
3. Wear loose-fitting clothing to minimize friction and irritation on the nipple area.
4. Monitor for any changes in the appearance of the bumps, such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge, and report these to your healthcare provider.
In conclusion, while there are several potential causes for the painful pimples on your nipple, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Early intervention can help prevent complications and provide you with peace of mind regarding your health.
