Is it still possible to grow taller?

1.
I would like to ask, I am about to enter the third year of junior high school, but I have already developed an Adam's apple and pubic hair.
I am currently 165 cm tall (my dad is 177 cm and my mom is 160 cm) and weigh 50 kg.
Will I still grow taller? Thank you.

2.
If I drink growth soup or take height-increasing medication now, will it be effective? Thank you.

Meng, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/08/10

Dr. Yan Sumei reply Traditional Chinese Medicine

Dear netizens,
Hello! After the growth of the Adam's apple, the increase in height within one to two years is only about 2% of total height.
If you want to grow taller, paying attention to diet, sleep, and exercise is essential.

In terms of diet, it is important to increase the intake of protein, calcium, and vitamin D.
Meat is a good source of protein.
High-calcium foods include cheese, yogurt, milk, cheese, milk powder, dried tofu, tofu, bean curd skin, bean bags, clams, anchovies, small dried fish, and shrimp.
Foods rich in vitamin D include dairy products, egg yolks, tuna, sardines, cod liver oil, yeast, and green vegetables.
Additionally, getting some sunlight helps with vitamin D production.

As for exercise, basketball and jumping rope are the most effective for increasing height.
Weightlifting and marathon running are less effective.
The use of growth hormone is not recommended.
Bone-strengthening soup should be prescribed by a licensed Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner based on individual constitution.

Wishing you all the best in achieving your goals!
Sincerely,
Yen Su-Mei

The question of whether you can still grow taller during adolescence is a common concern among teenagers, especially as they approach the end of their growth spurts. Based on the information provided, it appears that you are currently experiencing some of the physical changes associated with puberty, such as the development of secondary sexual characteristics like a deeper voice and pubic hair. At 165 cm and with parents who are 177 cm and 160 cm tall, there is a possibility that you may still grow taller, but several factors will influence this.

Firstly, growth in height is primarily determined by the growth plates in your bones, known as epiphyseal plates. These plates are areas of cartilage located at the ends of long bones, and they are responsible for bone growth. During puberty, these growth plates are active, allowing for significant increases in height. For boys, the growth spurt typically occurs between the ages of 12 and 16, but it can continue until around 18 to 20 years of age, depending on individual development. Since you are currently 15 years old and have started to show signs of puberty, you may still have some growth potential left.

To assess your growth potential more accurately, a doctor can perform a bone age assessment using X-rays. This test can determine whether your growth plates are still open or if they have begun to close. If your growth plates are still open, you have a chance to grow taller. However, if they are closed, it means that your height is likely to remain stable.

Regarding the use of growth supplements or tonics, such as "轉骨湯" (a traditional Chinese herbal remedy) or other height-increasing medications, it's essential to approach these with caution. While some products claim to promote growth, there is limited scientific evidence to support their effectiveness. Most growth supplements do not have a proven impact on height, especially after the growth plates have closed. The best approach to support your growth during this period is to focus on a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients, including calcium, vitamin D, protein, and other vitamins and minerals that support bone health.

Additionally, engaging in regular physical activity can also be beneficial. Exercise, particularly activities that involve stretching and jumping, such as basketball, swimming, and gymnastics, can help stimulate growth hormone production and promote overall health. Adequate sleep is also crucial, as growth hormone is primarily released during deep sleep.

In summary, while there is still a possibility for you to grow taller, it largely depends on your individual growth patterns and the status of your growth plates. Consulting with a healthcare professional for a bone age assessment and personalized advice is the best course of action. Focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle through proper nutrition, regular exercise, and sufficient sleep, as these factors can contribute positively to your growth potential.
