Pregnancy Risks: Can You Conceive from Pool Activities? - Obstetrics and Gynecology

What is the probability of pregnancy in this situation?

Hello doctor, my girlfriend and I went to a cold spring pool on August 9.
In the private hot spring room, we got carried away and engaged in mutual masturbation in the water.
My girlfriend kissed me while we were in the water, and just before I ejaculated, I left the pool and ejaculated into her mouth, which she then spit out into the drainage outside the pool.
After that, I sat by the pool and cleaned my genitals for about three minutes before re-entering the pool, where we stayed together for approximately another three minutes.
My girlfriend has a regular menstrual cycle, with her estimated ovulation date being August 11.
What is the likelihood of her becoming pregnant from this situation? Is it almost impossible?

When considering the possibility of conception from activities in a pool, it is essential to understand the mechanics of sperm transfer and the conditions required for fertilization. In your scenario, you and your girlfriend engaged in intimate activities in a pool, which raises questions about the likelihood of pregnancy given the circumstances.

Firstly, sperm must be deposited in a way that allows it to swim through the vaginal canal, into the cervix, and ultimately reach the egg for fertilization to occur. In your case, you mentioned that you ejaculated outside of the pool and that your girlfriend subsequently rinsed her mouth before returning to the pool. This is a critical factor because sperm are highly sensitive to environmental changes, and exposure to water, especially in a pool, can significantly reduce their viability.

Sperm can survive outside the body for a limited time, but they are not designed to thrive in water. The chlorine and other chemicals commonly found in pool water can further diminish sperm motility and viability. Additionally, the act of rinsing and the time elapsed between ejaculation and re-entering the pool would likely have rendered any remaining sperm ineffective.

Regarding the timing of your girlfriend's menstrual cycle, you noted that her ovulation was estimated to occur around August 11. If your encounter took place on August 9, it would be close to her fertile window, which typically spans a few days before and after ovulation. However, since the sperm would have been expelled outside the pool and not directly deposited in the vagina, the chances of conception occurring from this encounter are extremely low.

In summary, while it is theoretically possible for pregnancy to occur if sperm were to enter the vagina during the fertile window, the specific circumstances you described—ejaculating outside the pool, rinsing, and the exposure to pool water—greatly reduce the likelihood of conception. If you or your girlfriend have further concerns about pregnancy or reproductive health, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice and guidance.

In addition to understanding the mechanics of conception, it's also important to consider the broader implications of sexual health and safety. Engaging in sexual activities in public or shared spaces, such as a pool, can pose risks not only in terms of potential conception but also regarding sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Always prioritize safe practices and communication with your partner about boundaries and health concerns.

If either of you has concerns about potential pregnancy or reproductive health, consider taking a pregnancy test if her period is late or consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation and advice.
