Could this lead to pregnancy?

Hello doctor, my girlfriend and I were at the swimming pool and I touched her lower body over her swimsuit.
Later, there was contact with more intimate areas, also over the swimsuit.
When we rinsed off, I noticed a little slippery fluid came out, but I did not ejaculate.
What is this fluid, and could this lead to pregnancy? Her period just ended 4.5 days ago.

Bai, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/07/07

When it comes to the question of whether you can get pregnant from poolside contact, particularly through clothing, it's important to understand the mechanics of sperm transfer and the conditions necessary for conception to occur.

Firstly, sperm must be deposited in the vaginal canal for pregnancy to happen. In your scenario, where there was contact through swimwear, the likelihood of sperm being transferred in a way that could lead to pregnancy is extremely low. Sperm are quite sensitive and require a specific environment to survive. They can only live for a short period outside the body, and exposure to air, water, or fabric significantly reduces their viability.

The "slippery substance" you mentioned could be pre-ejaculatory fluid, also known as pre-cum. This fluid can contain sperm, but the amount is typically much lower than in ejaculate. However, the risk of pregnancy from pre-ejaculatory fluid is still considered low, especially if there was no direct ejaculation and the contact was through clothing.
It's also worth noting that your girlfriend's menstrual cycle plays a crucial role in this situation. If her last menstrual period ended just 4-5 days ago, she would likely be in the follicular phase of her cycle, which is generally considered a less fertile time. Ovulation typically occurs about 14 days before the start of the next menstrual period, meaning that the window for conception is usually around the middle of the cycle.
However, cycles can vary, and some women may have irregular cycles or ovulate earlier or later than expected. If your girlfriend has a regular cycle, the chances of her being fertile at this time are relatively low, but it is not impossible.

If there are concerns about potential pregnancy, the best course of action is to wait for her next menstrual cycle. If her period is late, she should take a home pregnancy test for confirmation. These tests are quite accurate and can provide peace of mind.

In summary, while the risk of pregnancy from poolside contact through swimwear is very low, it is not entirely impossible. If you and your girlfriend are concerned about unintended pregnancy, consider discussing contraceptive options for the future to prevent similar worries. Additionally, if either of you has further questions or concerns about sexual health or pregnancy risks, consulting with a healthcare provider can provide personalized advice and reassurance.
