Chest tightness?
Hello! I am an 18-year-old female.
Since I can remember, I have occasionally experienced sharp pain in my left or right chest, usually near the rib area.
This happens about once every few weeks and lasts no more than 3 minutes.
However, last night, I suddenly experienced sharp pain in my left chest that lasted for several hours.
When I tried to lie on my left side while sleeping, the pain became severe, and I was unable to lie on my side or take deep breaths, as it intensified the pain.
I would like to know what might be causing this and if I need to undergo any examinations.

Hello: It is recommended that you see a pulmonologist for a chest X-ray to check for any lung diseases, especially pneumothorax.
If the X-ray is normal, it is more likely to be neuralgia.
You should try to get enough rest, avoid staying up late, and limit the intake of cold foods.
Best wishes!

Chest pain can be a concerning symptom, especially when it is sudden, severe, or persistent. As an 18-year-old female experiencing intermittent sharp pain in the chest, particularly on the left side, it is important to consider various potential causes and when to seek medical attention.
Firstly, the nature of your chest pain is crucial in understanding its possible origins. You mentioned that the pain is localized near the ribcage and can last for several hours, which raises the possibility of musculoskeletal issues. Conditions such as costochondritis, which is inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the sternum, can cause sharp, localized pain that may worsen with certain movements or deep breathing. This type of pain is often reproducible by pressing on the affected area.
Another potential cause could be related to anxiety or panic attacks, which can manifest as chest pain. These episodes can be accompanied by other symptoms such as shortness of breath, palpitations, or a feeling of impending doom. Given your age, anxiety-related chest pain is not uncommon, especially in stressful situations.
However, the sudden onset of prolonged chest pain, especially if it is associated with difficulty breathing or changes in position, raises the concern for more serious conditions. While it is less common in younger individuals, conditions such as pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lungs) or pneumothorax (collapsed lung) can present with similar symptoms. These conditions typically require immediate medical evaluation.
Given that you experienced a significant episode of pain that lasted for hours and was exacerbated by movement and breathing, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider may perform a physical examination and consider diagnostic tests such as a chest X-ray, electrocardiogram (ECG), or even a CT scan if there is a concern for pulmonary issues. Blood tests may also be conducted to rule out any underlying conditions.
In summary, while your symptoms may be related to musculoskeletal issues or anxiety, the nature and duration of your chest pain warrant a thorough evaluation to rule out any serious conditions. It is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to chest pain, especially if it is new, severe, or associated with other concerning symptoms. If you experience any additional symptoms such as dizziness, fainting, or persistent pain, seek emergency medical care immediately.
