Unpleasant odor in the genital area?

Hello, I recently exercised while wearing jeans, and I noticed an increase in odor in my lower region, although there was no itching or other symptoms.
I had a health check-up shortly after, and my urine test showed a higher than normal level of red blood cells (10-25/HPF).
Possible causes include stones, infections, or urinary tract disorders, and I was advised to drink more water.
Perhaps I haven't been drinking enough? It's been a month, and I still notice a strong fishy odor in my lower region.
The discharge is yellow-green, not white! Urination is normal, and there is no itching.
I only rinse with water while showering, but the odor persists.
Should I definitely see a doctor?

1.
Yellow-green discharge is not a normal color; it is recommended to visit a healthcare facility for examination and to perform a Pap smear (if there has been sexual activity).
2.
If the urine test results indicate symptoms of urethritis, it is advised to drink plenty of water and to have a follow-up test in three months.

When it comes to unpleasant odors in the genital area, especially when accompanied by changes in discharge color, it is essential to take these symptoms seriously. While you mentioned that you do not have itching or discomfort, the presence of a strong odor and yellow-green discharge can indicate an underlying issue that may require medical attention.

Firstly, the odor you are experiencing could be due to a variety of factors, including bacterial vaginosis (BV), a yeast infection, or even a sexually transmitted infection (STI). BV is particularly known for causing a fishy odor and can occur when there is an imbalance in the normal bacteria found in the vagina. The yellow-green discharge you described could also be a sign of an infection, particularly if it has a strong odor.
Given that your urine test showed elevated red blood cells, this could suggest a urinary tract infection (UTI) or other urinary issues, which can also contribute to unpleasant odors. UTIs can sometimes cause changes in vaginal discharge and may lead to a strong smell as well. It is crucial to drink plenty of water, as hydration can help flush out your urinary system and may alleviate some symptoms. However, if the odor persists despite increased fluid intake, it is advisable to seek medical care.

In your case, I would recommend scheduling an appointment with a gynecologist or a healthcare provider who specializes in women's health. They can perform a thorough examination, including a pelvic exam and possibly a culture of the discharge, to determine the exact cause of the odor and discharge. This is particularly important because some infections can lead to more severe complications if left untreated.

In addition to seeking medical advice, here are some general tips for managing vaginal health:
1. Maintain Good Hygiene: While you mentioned using only water to rinse, it's important to ensure that you are cleaning the area properly. Avoid using scented soaps or douches, as these can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria and lead to infections.

2. Wear Breathable Fabrics: Opt for cotton underwear and loose-fitting clothing to allow for better air circulation, which can help reduce moisture and odor.

3. Monitor Your Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in discharge, odor, or other symptoms. If you notice any additional symptoms such as itching, burning during urination, or pelvic pain, make sure to inform your healthcare provider.

4. Stay Hydrated: As mentioned, drinking plenty of water can help maintain urinary tract health and may assist in reducing odor.

5. Avoid Irritants: Be cautious with products that may irritate the genital area, such as scented pads, tampons, or feminine hygiene sprays.

In conclusion, while some changes in odor and discharge can be normal, persistent or strong odors, especially with changes in discharge color, warrant a visit to a healthcare provider. Early intervention can lead to better outcomes and help maintain your overall reproductive health. Don't hesitate to reach out for professional help; your health is paramount.
