Is it possible to get pregnant?

Hello, doctor.
My menstrual period started on June 12 and ended on June 18.
I had sexual intercourse on June 19 with full condom protection.
My menstrual period started again on July 10, initially with light flow that lasted two to three days, then returned to normal flow but took a long time to completely clear up, approximately two weeks.
Since June 19, I have had no sexual intercourse, but my period for August has not arrived as of today, August 31.
Is it possible that I am pregnant? (The last time I had sexual intercourse was on June 19.) I have also been seeing a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner for almost two weeks, but my period still has not come.

Hello Ms.
KJD: If you have not engaged in any sexual activity since June 19, then the likelihood of pregnancy is almost zero.
However, if you are still concerned, you can take a pregnancy test for reassurance.
If the test is negative, please consult a gynecologist for medication to induce menstruation.

More Info

It sounds like you are experiencing a concerning situation regarding your menstrual cycle and the possibility of pregnancy after protected intercourse. Based on the timeline you provided, you had your last menstrual period starting on June 12, and you engaged in protected sexual intercourse on June 19. You reported that your next period began on July 10, albeit with some irregularities, and now you are experiencing a delay in your menstrual cycle in August.

To address your question, the likelihood of pregnancy after protected intercourse, especially when using condoms correctly, is generally low. Condoms are designed to be an effective barrier method of contraception, and when used properly, they significantly reduce the risk of sperm entering the vagina and fertilizing an egg. However, no contraceptive method is 100% effective, and there is always a small chance of failure due to factors such as breakage or slippage of the condom.

Given that you had a normal menstrual period starting on July 10, it is less likely that you are pregnant from the intercourse on June 19. However, the irregularities in your menstrual cycle, including the delayed period in August, could be attributed to several factors, including stress, hormonal imbalances, or other underlying health issues. It is also worth noting that some women experience changes in their menstrual cycle due to various reasons, including lifestyle changes, weight fluctuations, or medical conditions.

Since you mentioned that you have been seeing a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner for about two weeks, it is possible that the treatment may also influence your menstrual cycle. Traditional medicine can sometimes take time to show effects, and it may be beneficial to continue monitoring your cycle while undergoing treatment.

If you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, I would recommend taking a home pregnancy test for confirmation. These tests are widely available and can provide quick results. If the test is negative and your period still does not arrive, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation. They can assess your overall health, perform any necessary tests, and help determine the cause of your menstrual irregularities.

In summary, while the chances of pregnancy after protected intercourse are low, the irregularities in your menstrual cycle warrant further investigation. Taking a home pregnancy test and consulting with a healthcare provider will help clarify your situation and provide you with the necessary guidance moving forward. Remember, it is essential to prioritize your health and well-being, and seeking professional advice is always a good step when you have concerns about your reproductive health.
