Foreskin issues
I had a circumcision nearly 10 years ago, and recently I have developed three itchy bumps at the site of the incision.
They often itch so much that I wake up in the middle of the night.
What should I do to treat this?

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology
Hello: If there is redness and the area is enlarging, it may indicate inflammation—please seek medical attention.
If there is no redness, and the condition is not worsening or enlarging, it is recommended to keep the area dry and temporarily avoid using soap locally.
Of course, if possible, consulting a urologist at a hospital is the safest option (especially if there have been similar past occurrences).
Thank you.

More Info
Dealing with itchy bumps after circumcision can be a frustrating and uncomfortable experience. It’s important to understand that while circumcision is a common procedure, the healing process can sometimes lead to complications or changes in the skin that may cause irritation or discomfort. Here’s a comprehensive overview of what you might be experiencing and how to address it.
Understanding the Symptoms
The itchy bumps you are experiencing could be due to several reasons:
1. Scar Tissue Formation: After circumcision, the area may develop scar tissue, which can sometimes be sensitive or itchy. This is a normal part of the healing process, but if the scar tissue is excessive, it may lead to discomfort.
2. Infection: If the bumps are red, swollen, or painful, they could indicate an infection. Infections can occur even years after the procedure, especially if there is any irritation or injury to the area.
3. Allergic Reaction: Sometimes, the skin can react to products such as soaps, lotions, or even laundry detergents. If you’ve changed any products recently, this could be a potential cause.
4. Dermatitis: Conditions like contact dermatitis or eczema can cause itchy bumps. This could be due to irritation from clothing or hygiene products.
5. Folliculitis: This is an inflammation of the hair follicles, which can occur in the genital area and may present as itchy bumps.
Recommended Actions
1. Consult a Healthcare Professional: The first step in addressing your symptoms should be to consult with a healthcare provider, preferably a urologist or dermatologist. They can perform a physical examination and may recommend tests to determine the exact cause of the bumps.
2. Maintain Hygiene: Ensure that the area is kept clean and dry. Use mild, unscented soap to wash the area, and avoid any harsh chemicals or fragrances that could irritate the skin.
3. Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that your symptoms may be due to an allergic reaction, try to identify and eliminate any potential irritants from your routine. This includes soaps, lotions, and even certain fabrics.
4. Topical Treatments: Depending on the diagnosis, your doctor may recommend topical treatments. For example, if the bumps are due to an allergic reaction or dermatitis, a mild corticosteroid cream may help reduce inflammation and itching.
5. Antihistamines: If the itching is severe, over-the-counter antihistamines may provide relief. However, it’s best to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new medication.
6. Avoid Scratching: While it may be tempting to scratch the itchy bumps, doing so can lead to further irritation or even infection. Try to keep the area moisturized and avoid tight clothing that may exacerbate the itching.
7. Follow-Up: If your symptoms persist or worsen, it’s crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may need to perform further evaluations or consider other treatment options.
Conclusion
While itchy bumps after circumcision can be bothersome, understanding the potential causes and seeking appropriate medical advice is key to finding relief. Remember that your health and comfort are paramount, and addressing these symptoms early can prevent further complications. Always consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice and treatment options tailored to your specific situation.
