After circumcision, the penis and scrotum may experience itching?
I would like to ask the doctor, after my circumcision surgery, I have been continuously bandaging the wound.
It has been almost a month since the surgery, and recently I have started to experience itching at the base of the wound and in the middle of the scrotum.
There is also a sticky, clear discharge around the entire base and near the wound, which keeps secreting even after I wipe it.
Could this be due to the bandaged wound being too moist? Additionally, I have noticed that some parts of the sutured area have raised tissue.
Is it possible to use silicone gel to reduce scarring on the wound?

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology
Hello, regarding the condition of the wound, a direct medical consultation is necessary for an accurate diagnosis.
Note: It could be a wound infection or a phenomenon caused by tissue fluid during the healing process.
Since the surgery was only a month ago, if the wound is uneven, the extent needs to be assessed.
You should consult a physician nearby before deciding whether to use cosmetic adhesive.
Additionally, if the first issue is due to discharge caused by an infection, then cosmetic adhesive should not be used, as it could worsen the infection.

More Info
Post-circumcision itching and discharge can be concerning, and it's important to understand the potential causes and appropriate treatments for these symptoms. After circumcision, it is common for patients to experience some degree of itching and discomfort as the area heals. However, persistent itching and the presence of a clear, sticky discharge may indicate a few different issues.
Possible Causes of Itching and Discharge
1. Moisture and Wound Care: If the wound is kept too moist due to excessive bandaging or inadequate drying, it can lead to irritation and itching. The skin in the genital area is sensitive, and prolonged moisture can create an environment conducive to irritation or even infection.
2. Infection: The presence of discharge, especially if it is accompanied by redness, swelling, or increased pain, could indicate an infection. Infections can occur post-surgery, and they may present with symptoms such as itching, discharge, and discomfort.
3. Allergic Reaction: Sometimes, the materials used in bandaging or topical ointments can cause allergic reactions, leading to itching and irritation.
4. Keloid Formation: The "bump" you describe at the suture site could be a keloid or hypertrophic scar, which is a common response to surgical wounds, especially in sensitive areas.
Recommendations for Treatment
1. Wound Care: Ensure that you are following proper wound care instructions. If you are still bandaging the area, consider allowing it to air out periodically to reduce moisture. Gently clean the area with mild soap and water, and pat it dry. Avoid using harsh soaps or fragrances that could irritate the skin.
2. Topical Treatments: If the itching is bothersome, over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream may help reduce inflammation and itching. However, consult your doctor before applying any topical medication, especially on a healing wound.
3. Consult Your Surgeon: Given the symptoms you are experiencing, it is advisable to follow up with the surgeon who performed the circumcision. They can assess whether there is an infection or if the discharge is a normal part of the healing process. They can also evaluate the suture site to determine if the protruding tissue is a keloid or if it requires further treatment.
4. Scar Treatment: If you are concerned about scarring, once the wound has fully healed, you may consider using silicone gel sheets or silicone gel, which are often recommended for scar management. These products can help flatten and soften scars over time. However, it is essential to wait until the wound is completely healed before applying any scar treatment.
5. Avoid Irritants: Avoid tight clothing and any products that may irritate the area, such as scented soaps or lotions.
Conclusion
In summary, while some itching and discharge can be normal after circumcision, persistent symptoms warrant a consultation with your healthcare provider. They can provide a thorough examination and determine the best course of action based on your specific situation. Proper wound care, monitoring for signs of infection, and discussing scar management options with your doctor will help ensure a smoother recovery process.
