Irregular menstruation caused by excessive weight loss?

I have been experiencing irregular menstrual cycles, and recently, I wanted to lose weight for my wedding photos, but I haven't been able to lose any weight.
My period has also not come for almost three months.
I went for an examination to check for polycystic ovary syndrome, but the doctor said it is not the case.
They suggested I receive a menstrual induction injection first to bring my period back, and then they would prescribe a medication to regulate my cycle that is not a contraceptive pill, as I have plans to have a baby soon.
I would like to ask if my weight is causing my missed periods, and will taking the menstrual regulation medication make me gain weight?

Zhenzhen, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/09/02

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Taking menstrual regulation medication should not lead to weight gain or obesity.
On one hand, being overweight makes it more difficult to conceive, and on the other hand, pregnancy can increase the risk of complications such as hypertension and diabetes.
It is advisable to spend some time reducing your weight before considering pregnancy.
Sincerely, Dr.

Extreme weight loss can significantly impact menstrual cycles, leading to irregularities or even amenorrhea (the absence of menstruation). This phenomenon is often linked to hormonal imbalances that arise from rapid changes in body weight, particularly in women. When the body experiences extreme weight loss, it can trigger a stress response that affects the hypothalamus, the part of the brain responsible for regulating hormones related to the menstrual cycle.
In your case, it sounds like you have been experiencing irregular menstruation, and your recent attempts to lose weight for your wedding have not yielded the desired results. The fact that you have not had a period for nearly three months is concerning and warrants further investigation. While you mentioned that your doctor ruled out polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), it is essential to consider other factors that could be contributing to your irregular cycles.

One of the primary reasons for missed periods in women who are overweight or obese is the disruption of hormonal balance. Excess body fat can lead to increased estrogen levels, which can interfere with ovulation and menstruation. Conversely, significant weight loss can lead to a decrease in body fat, which may also disrupt the hormonal signals necessary for a regular menstrual cycle.
Regarding your concerns about taking medication to induce menstruation, it is crucial to discuss this with your healthcare provider. The medication you mentioned, which is not a contraceptive, may help regulate your cycle, but it is essential to understand how it may affect your weight. Some hormonal treatments can lead to weight gain in certain individuals, while others may not have this effect. It is vital to have an open conversation with your doctor about your weight concerns and your desire to conceive in the near future.
If you are planning to conceive, maintaining a healthy weight is essential, as both underweight and overweight conditions can affect fertility. If your weight loss efforts have not been successful, consider working with a registered dietitian or a nutritionist who can help you develop a balanced eating plan that supports your goals without compromising your health.
In addition to dietary changes, incorporating regular physical activity can also help regulate your menstrual cycle and improve your overall health. However, it is essential to approach exercise in a balanced way, as excessive exercise can also lead to missed periods.
In summary, extreme weight loss can lead to irregular menstruation due to hormonal imbalances. It is essential to work closely with your healthcare provider to address your menstrual irregularities and discuss the best approach for regulating your cycle while considering your plans for pregnancy. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle through balanced nutrition and moderate exercise can help support your reproductive health. If you have further concerns about the medications or their effects on your weight, do not hesitate to seek a second opinion or consult a specialist in reproductive health.
