How long after wisdom tooth extraction is it advisable to remove the stitches?

I just had my wisdom tooth removed on September 6th, and I received one stitch on the upper left side.
Due to scheduling conflicts, I won't be able to have the stitch removed until two weeks later on September 19th.
Will this have any impact?

After wisdom tooth extraction, the timing for stitch removal can vary based on several factors, including the type of stitches used (absorbable vs. non-absorbable), the complexity of the extraction, and individual healing rates. Generally, stitches are removed between 7 to 14 days post-surgery. In your case, since you had your wisdom tooth extracted on September 6 and are scheduled to have your stitches removed on September 19, this would mean a wait of about 13 days.

If the stitches are non-absorbable, waiting too long to remove them can lead to complications such as inflammation, infection, or discomfort. Non-absorbable stitches can irritate the surrounding tissue if they remain in place longer than necessary. On the other hand, if absorbable stitches were used, they typically dissolve on their own, and the timing for removal is less critical. However, even with absorbable stitches, it is advisable to follow up with your dentist or oral surgeon to ensure proper healing.

In your situation, waiting an additional week beyond the typical removal timeframe may not cause significant issues, but it is essential to monitor the extraction site for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge. If you experience any unusual symptoms, it would be wise to consult your dentist sooner rather than later.

In terms of post-operative care, maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial for preventing infection and promoting healing. You should continue to gently brush your teeth, avoiding the extraction site, and use a non-alcoholic mouthwash to help keep the area clean. If you notice any persistent pain or discomfort, or if the area appears to be healing poorly, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

In summary, while it is generally acceptable to wait up to two weeks for stitch removal, it is important to be vigilant about your healing process and to consult with your dentist if you have any concerns. Proper follow-up care is essential to ensure a smooth recovery after wisdom tooth extraction.

Hello: If there is currently no pain or excessive bleeding, it is recommended to return for a follow-up appointment to remove the stitches in one week. There is no need to add another stitch now, as it would only increase the pain at the wound site.
