Post-operative issues after wisdom tooth extraction?

I would like to ask about my experience after having my wisdom teeth removed.
The doctor mentioned that the stitches would be removed in two weeks.
Today is the fifth day, and it seems that one of the stitches came out yesterday.
Currently, I am only experiencing mild pain (which is not constant).
I have two questions:
1.
How many stitches are typically used? I think one came out yesterday, but there is still one black stitch remaining (I couldn't see clearly yesterday as it was washed away with water).
If there is indeed only one stitch left, will that have a significant impact?
2.
I have read online that if a stitch falls out, one should just be more cautious and see a doctor if there are any issues.
Since it is already the fifth day, and some people say they recover better in a week and have their stitches removed, should I go see a doctor immediately, or can I monitor the situation before making a decision?

Hello: If there is currently no pain or excessive bleeding, it is recommended to return for a follow-up appointment to remove the stitches in one week.
There is no need to add another stitch now, as it would only increase the pain at the wound site.

After wisdom tooth extraction, it's common to have concerns about the healing process, especially if stitches come loose. Let's address your questions and provide some additional context regarding post-operative care.

1. Number of Stitches: The number of stitches used during a wisdom tooth extraction can vary depending on the complexity of the extraction and the surgeon's preference. Typically, a dentist or oral surgeon may use anywhere from one to several stitches to close the incision site. If you notice that one stitch has come loose but another remains, it may not be a significant issue, especially if the remaining stitch is still holding the tissue together adequately. The primary goal of the stitches is to promote healing and minimize bleeding, so as long as the area isn't excessively bleeding or showing signs of infection, having one stitch come loose might not be critical.

2. When to See a Doctor: Since you are experiencing only mild, intermittent pain and are five days post-surgery, it is reasonable to monitor the situation for a short period. Many patients heal well within a week, and some may even have their stitches removed sooner if the healing is progressing well. However, you should be vigilant for any signs of complications, such as increased pain, swelling, or discharge from the extraction site, which could indicate an infection. If you notice any of these symptoms, or if the pain worsens, it would be wise to contact your dentist or oral surgeon for further evaluation.

Additional Considerations for Post-Extraction Care
- Oral Hygiene: Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial after wisdom tooth extraction. You should gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water starting 24 hours after surgery to help keep the area clean and promote healing. Avoid vigorous rinsing, as this can dislodge any remaining stitches or blood clots.

- Diet: Stick to a soft diet for the first few days post-surgery. Foods like yogurt, applesauce, and smoothies are good options. Avoid hard, crunchy, or spicy foods that could irritate the extraction site.

- Pain Management: If you experience discomfort, over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage pain. Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your healthcare provider.

- Follow-Up Appointments: It's essential to attend any scheduled follow-up appointments with your dentist or oral surgeon. They will assess your healing progress and determine if the stitches need to be removed or if further treatment is necessary.

- Signs of Complications: Be aware of signs that may indicate complications, such as:
- Severe pain that does not improve with medication.

- Swelling that worsens after the first few days.

- Fever or chills, which could indicate an infection.

- Persistent bleeding or oozing from the extraction site.

In conclusion, while it is generally safe to observe your condition after a stitch has come loose, remain attentive to any changes in your symptoms. If you have any doubts or if your condition changes, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance. Your health and comfort should always come first, and seeking professional advice is a proactive step in ensuring a smooth recovery.
