Shoulder pain?
On the morning of September 7th, I fell down the stairs, landing on my back.
I can't remember if I hit my head, but I only noticed that I had difficulty lifting my neck while taking a shower that evening.
The next morning, I found it hard to get out of bed; I had to roll to the side instead of getting up straight.
Any effort to use my neck causes pain, and turning my head also hurts, so I have to be very careful.
Is this considered serious?

More Info
Shoulder pain and neck discomfort following a fall can be concerning, especially when accompanied by difficulty in movement and pain. Based on your description, it sounds like you may have sustained an injury that requires medical evaluation. Here’s a breakdown of what you should consider and when to seek medical attention.
Understanding Your Symptoms
1. Pain and Limited Range of Motion: The inability to lift your neck or the presence of pain when attempting to do so can indicate a strain or sprain in the neck muscles or ligaments. It could also suggest a more serious injury, such as a cervical spine injury or even a herniated disc, especially if the pain radiates down your arms.
2. Mechanism of Injury: Falling backward can lead to various injuries, including whiplash, which occurs when the head is suddenly jerked backward and then forward. This can strain the muscles and ligaments in the neck, leading to pain and stiffness.
3. Neurological Symptoms: If you experience any numbness, tingling, or weakness in your arms or hands, this could indicate nerve involvement, which may require immediate medical attention.
When to Seek Medical Attention
You should seek medical attention if you experience any of the following:
- Severe Pain: If the pain is intense and not relieved by over-the-counter pain medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
- Neurological Symptoms: Numbness, tingling, or weakness in your arms or hands.
- Inability to Move: If you find it increasingly difficult to move your neck or shoulder, or if the pain worsens with movement.
- Persistent Symptoms: If your symptoms do not improve within a few days or worsen over time.
- Head Injury: If you suspect you may have hit your head during the fall, especially if you experience headaches, dizziness, or confusion.
Recommended Actions
1. Initial Care: Rest and avoid activities that exacerbate your pain. Applying ice to the affected area can help reduce swelling and numb the pain.
2. Over-the-Counter Medications: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen can help manage pain and inflammation.
3. Medical Evaluation: Given your symptoms, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider. They may recommend imaging studies, such as X-rays or an MRI, to assess for fractures, dislocations, or soft tissue injuries.
4. Physical Therapy: If your doctor determines that there are no serious injuries, they may recommend physical therapy to help restore range of motion and strengthen the muscles around your shoulder and neck.
5. Follow-Up: Keep track of your symptoms and follow up with your healthcare provider if your condition does not improve or if new symptoms arise.
Conclusion
In summary, while some shoulder and neck pain after a fall can be attributed to minor strains, the severity of your symptoms suggests that a thorough medical evaluation is warranted. It’s important to err on the side of caution, especially with potential neck injuries, as early intervention can lead to better outcomes and prevent complications. Don’t hesitate to seek medical attention to ensure your health and well-being.
