Pain upon palpation of the upper arm?
Hello Dr.
Lee,
I accidentally slipped and fell the other day, landing on my left side and instinctively bracing myself with my left hand.
Initially, I didn't feel much discomfort, but by the afternoon, I started to feel soreness when pressing on the muscles of my left upper arm.
I would like to ask if I need to seek further medical examination, or if applying a topical patch would suffice for recovery.
Thank you for your response.
Best regards,
Tina

After a fall, experiencing arm pain can be concerning, and it's essential to assess the situation carefully. Based on your description, it seems that you initially did not feel any discomfort, but later developed soreness in your left upper arm. This delayed onset of pain can sometimes indicate an injury that may not have been immediately apparent, such as a muscle strain, ligament injury, or even a fracture.
In general, if you experience pain after a fall, especially if it worsens over time or if you notice swelling, bruising, or difficulty moving the arm, it is advisable to seek medical attention. While some minor injuries may heal with rest and conservative treatment such as applying a topical analgesic patch or ice, others may require more thorough evaluation and treatment.
Here are some key points to consider:
1. Severity of Pain: If the pain is mild and manageable, you might try resting the arm, applying ice, and using over-the-counter pain relief medications. However, if the pain is severe or worsening, it is crucial to see a doctor.
2. Range of Motion: If you find it difficult to move your arm or if certain movements cause significant pain, this could indicate a more serious injury, such as a fracture or significant muscle damage. In such cases, medical evaluation is necessary.
3. Swelling or Bruising: The presence of swelling or bruising can be a sign of injury. If you notice these symptoms, it is best to consult a healthcare professional.
4. Potential Fractures: Falls can lead to fractures, particularly in older adults or those with conditions that weaken bones. An X-ray may be necessary to rule out any fractures, especially if you have persistent pain.
5. Follow-Up Care: If you do see a doctor, they may recommend imaging studies like X-rays or MRIs to assess the extent of the injury. Depending on the findings, treatment may include physical therapy, medication, or in some cases, surgery.
6. Rehabilitation: If your injury is confirmed to be a strain or sprain, rehabilitation exercises may be recommended to restore strength and flexibility to the arm.
In conclusion, while some minor injuries can be managed at home, it is always better to err on the side of caution. If you have any doubts about the severity of your injury or if your symptoms persist or worsen, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare professional can provide a thorough evaluation and appropriate treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. Remember, early intervention can often lead to better outcomes and a quicker recovery.
