Allergic rhinitis
Doctor, is it normal to have a runny nose and itchy eyes all day due to allergies? Are these signs of a cold? I don't have a sore throat, and after a good night's sleep, I feel much better the next day.
However, I felt quite lethargic throughout the day, constantly blowing my nose.
My nasal discharge is clear and transparent.
Would using a nasal rinse help improve my symptoms?

Hello: If allergic rhinitis symptoms affect your daily life, it is recommended to use oral antihistamines in combination with nasal sprays, which can generally provide good control.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

Allergic rhinitis, commonly referred to as hay fever, is a prevalent condition characterized by symptoms such as a runny nose, itchy eyes, sneezing, and nasal congestion. Your description of experiencing clear, watery nasal discharge and itchy eyes aligns well with the typical symptoms of allergic rhinitis rather than a common cold. Colds usually present with thicker, colored mucus and may be accompanied by other symptoms such as a sore throat or fever, which you mentioned you do not have.
The symptoms you are experiencing can be triggered by various allergens, including pollen, dust mites, pet dander, mold, and certain foods. When you are exposed to these allergens, your immune system reacts by releasing histamines and other chemicals, leading to the symptoms you described. The fact that you feel better after a night's sleep suggests that your body may be recovering from exposure to allergens, but it does not necessarily indicate a cold.
Using a nasal irrigation device, often referred to as a neti pot or saline nasal spray, can indeed help alleviate your symptoms. This method involves flushing out the nasal passages with a saline solution, which can help remove allergens, mucus, and irritants, providing relief from congestion and irritation. It is generally safe and can be an effective complementary treatment for allergic rhinitis.
In terms of treatment, there are several options available. Antihistamines, such as cetirizine (Zyrtec) or loratadine (Claritin), are commonly used to relieve symptoms by blocking the action of histamine. Nasal corticosteroids, like fluticasone (Flonase) or mometasone (Nasonex), are also effective in reducing inflammation in the nasal passages and can be used for more persistent symptoms. Decongestants may provide temporary relief from nasal congestion but should be used cautiously, as they can lead to rebound congestion if used for extended periods.
If your symptoms are persistent or significantly affecting your quality of life, it may be beneficial to consult with an allergist. They can perform tests to identify specific allergens and may recommend allergy shots (immunotherapy) as a long-term treatment option to help desensitize your immune system to these allergens.
In summary, your symptoms are consistent with allergic rhinitis rather than a cold, and using a nasal irrigation device can help improve your condition. Over-the-counter antihistamines and nasal corticosteroids are effective treatment options, and consulting with a healthcare professional can provide further guidance tailored to your specific situation.
