Bowel issues

In the past week or two, I have been having bowel movements 1 to 2 times a day, with a maximum of 3 times, whereas previously I would only have a bowel movement every 3 to 4 days.
Recently, my stools have been about 2 to 3 centimeters long and the width is about the size of two fingers.
The stools are not smooth around the edges; they have a jagged appearance.
I had a stool screening done in February of last year, and the results were normal.
I am a bit worried that I might have colon cancer.
I would like to ask if this is a change in my bowel habits.
I am almost 20 years old now, and I previously experienced nausea, but that has improved.

Dr. Ke Fangxu reply Surgery

At the age of 19, the likelihood of developing colorectal cancer is not zero, but generally, it is extremely low.
Based on your description, it seems more like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
It is recommended to maintain a light diet and a good lifestyle routine.
If symptoms persist without improvement, you can ask a physician for medication.
If there is still no improvement or if you are very concerned, you may also consider scheduling a colonoscopy.

Changes in bowel habits can be a source of concern for many individuals, especially when they deviate from what is considered normal for that person. In your case, you've noted a significant shift from having bowel movements every three to four days to experiencing them one to three times daily, with the stool being much smaller in size and exhibiting irregular edges. These changes can indeed be classified as a change in bowel habits, which can be influenced by various factors including diet, stress, and underlying medical conditions.

Firstly, it’s important to understand what constitutes a "normal" bowel habit. Normal bowel frequency can vary widely among individuals, ranging from three times a week to three times a day. Changes in this pattern, especially if accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea or changes in stool consistency, can warrant further investigation.

Your previous experience with normal stool tests and the absence of alarming symptoms such as blood in the stool are reassuring. However, the concern about colorectal cancer, especially at a young age, is understandable. While colorectal cancer is more common in older adults, it can occur in younger individuals, particularly those with a family history of the disease or certain genetic predispositions. The symptoms of colorectal cancer can include changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, and persistent abdominal discomfort.

The fact that you have experienced nausea in the past, which has since improved, could indicate that your gastrointestinal system is adjusting to new dietary or lifestyle changes. Stress and anxiety can also significantly impact bowel habits, leading to conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which is characterized by changes in bowel frequency and consistency, often triggered by stress or dietary factors.

Given your age and the recent changes in your bowel habits, it would be prudent to monitor your symptoms closely. If the changes persist, or if you develop additional symptoms such as abdominal pain, significant weight loss, or blood in your stool, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. This may include a physical examination, a detailed history of your symptoms, and possibly further testing such as imaging studies or a colonoscopy, depending on your doctor’s assessment.

In the meantime, consider maintaining a balanced diet rich in fiber, staying hydrated, and managing stress through relaxation techniques or physical activity. These lifestyle modifications can often help regulate bowel habits and improve overall gastrointestinal health.

In conclusion, while your recent changes in bowel habits are concerning, they are not necessarily indicative of a serious condition like colorectal cancer, especially given your previous normal screening results. However, ongoing monitoring and consultation with a healthcare provider are essential to ensure your gastrointestinal health and address any potential issues early on.
