Headache
Today I woke up with a severe pain on the left side of my head, which persisted into the evening.
Coughing forcefully causes pain, and bending over also triggers discomfort.
However, looking down, walking, and sitting do not cause any issues, and I am not sensitive to light or noise.
What could be the cause of this?

Dr. Jiang Junyi reply Neurology
Hello, based on your description, there are many potential causes for headaches, such as neck muscle inflammation and vascular headaches, among others.
If accompanied by fever, neurological deficits, or rapid progression of symptoms, conditions like meningitis, which can be life-threatening, should be considered.
I recommend consulting a neurologist to discuss evaluation and treatment.
Wishing you good health and peace.

More Info
Left-sided head pain can arise from various causes, and understanding these can help in determining the appropriate solutions. Based on your description, the pain is persistent and exacerbated by certain movements, such as bending over or coughing, while remaining absent during other activities like walking or sitting. This pattern can provide clues about the underlying issue.
Possible Causes of Left-Sided Head Pain
1. Muscle Tension and Strain: One of the most common causes of localized head pain is muscle tension, particularly in the neck and shoulder areas. Poor posture, stress, or sleeping in an awkward position can lead to muscle tightness, which may manifest as pain on one side of the head. If you have been under stress or have changed your sleeping position recently, this could be a contributing factor.
2. Cervicogenic Headache: This type of headache originates from issues in the cervical spine (neck). Symptoms often include pain on one side of the head, which can be aggravated by neck movements or certain postures. If you notice that your pain correlates with neck stiffness or discomfort, this could be a likely cause.
3. Sinus Issues: Given that you mentioned the pain intensifies with certain movements, sinusitis or other sinus-related issues could be a possibility. Inflammation or infection in the sinuses can lead to pressure and pain, particularly in the forehead and around the eyes. If you have had any recent upper respiratory infections or allergies, this could be a contributing factor.
4. Nerve Pain: Conditions such as occipital neuralgia can cause sharp, shooting pain on one side of the head. This type of pain can be triggered by movement or pressure on the affected area. If you experience sharp, stabbing pain that feels different from typical tension headaches, this may be worth exploring.
5. Migraine: While you mentioned not being sensitive to light or sound, it’s still possible that what you are experiencing could be a form of migraine. Migraines can sometimes present with unilateral pain and may not always include the classic symptoms of nausea or photophobia.
6. Other Neurological Conditions: Although less common, certain neurological conditions could present with unilateral head pain. If the pain persists or worsens, or if you experience additional symptoms such as visual disturbances, weakness, or changes in sensation, it would be crucial to seek medical attention.
Recommended Solutions
1. Consult a Healthcare Professional: Given the persistence of your symptoms, it is advisable to consult a neurologist or a headache specialist. They can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include imaging studies like an MRI or CT scan, to rule out any serious conditions.
2. Physical Therapy: If muscle tension or cervical issues are suspected, physical therapy may help alleviate pain through targeted exercises and stretches.
3. Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can provide temporary relief. However, it’s essential to use these medications as directed and not rely on them long-term without consulting a physician.
4. Lifestyle Modifications: Consider evaluating your sleep posture, stress levels, and daily activities. Ergonomic adjustments to your workspace and practicing relaxation techniques such as yoga or meditation may help reduce tension.
5. Hydration and Nutrition: Ensure you are well-hydrated and maintain a balanced diet, as dehydration and certain dietary triggers can contribute to headaches.
6. Keep a Headache Diary: Tracking your headaches, including their frequency, duration, and any associated symptoms, can provide valuable information for your healthcare provider.
In conclusion, while left-sided head pain can stem from various causes, identifying the specific reason requires careful evaluation. If your symptoms persist or worsen, seeking medical advice is crucial to ensure appropriate diagnosis and treatment.
