Height issues
Hello doctor: I am 15 years old, almost 16.
I grew 1 cm during the summer vacation, and my current height is 161 cm.
I want to grow to 170 cm, but when I asked a doctor at the hospital, he said that girls finish growing by age 16, while boys continue to grow until ages 18-20.
I’m not sure if that’s true.
Do I still have a chance to grow taller? My father is 168 cm tall and my mother is 154 cm tall.
Ouyang, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/09/25

Hello: Your height of 161 cm is normal.
At 15 years old, approaching 16, you still have the opportunity to grow taller.
Please do not worry excessively; some factors are determined by genetics and cannot be changed.
However, environmental factors can be self-managed.
Ensure you get adequate rest and sleep (avoid staying up late), maintain a balanced diet, and engage in moderate exercise.
You still have the chance to grow taller.
As for how much more you will grow, just let it happen naturally! Dr.

The question of whether you can still grow taller after the age of 16 is a common concern among adolescents, particularly as they navigate the complexities of puberty and growth spurts. To address your question, yes, it is still possible for you to grow taller after the age of 16, especially since you are currently 15 and approaching 16.
Growth in height is primarily determined by the growth plates in your bones, known as epiphyseal plates. These plates are areas of developing cartilage tissue located at the ends of long bones. During puberty, these growth plates are active and allow for an increase in height. In general, girls tend to complete their growth spurts earlier than boys, often around the ages of 16 to 18, while boys may continue to grow until they are about 18 to 21 years old. This means that as a male, you still have a window of opportunity to grow taller.
Your current height of 161 cm and your desire to reach 170 cm is achievable, especially if your growth plates have not yet fully closed. Factors that influence growth include genetics, nutrition, physical activity, and overall health. Given that your father is 168 cm and your mother is 154 cm, your genetic potential for height is likely within a range that could allow you to reach your goal, depending on how your body responds to the factors mentioned.
To maximize your growth potential, consider the following recommendations:
1. Nutrition: A balanced diet rich in essential nutrients is crucial for growth. Ensure you are consuming adequate amounts of protein, calcium, vitamins, and minerals. Foods such as dairy products, lean meats, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains should be staples in your diet.
2. Physical Activity: Engaging in regular physical activity, particularly exercises that promote stretching and strengthening, can be beneficial. Sports like basketball, swimming, and gymnastics can help stimulate growth hormones and improve posture, which may contribute to an increase in height.
3. Sleep: Adequate sleep is vital for growth, as growth hormone is primarily released during deep sleep. Aim for 8-10 hours of quality sleep each night to support your body's growth processes.
4. Posture: Maintaining good posture can help you appear taller and may also contribute to your overall height. Practice standing and sitting up straight to avoid any unnecessary compression of your spine.
5. Consult a Specialist: If you have concerns about your growth or development, consider consulting an endocrinologist or a pediatrician who specializes in growth disorders. They can assess your growth plates through X-rays and provide more personalized advice based on your individual growth pattern.
In conclusion, while there are no guarantees regarding how much taller you will grow, there is still a significant chance that you can reach your desired height of 170 cm. Focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and remember that growth can be a gradual process. Keep a positive mindset, and be patient as your body continues to develop.
