Nasal congestion, with pain and itching?

I feel uncomfortable because of the presence of mucus in my nose, so I clean it while showering.
Over the past few months, I've noticed that after cleaning one side of my nose, when I pinch it, that nostril becomes very itchy and slightly painful.
This is followed by sneezing and nasal congestion, but after a while, my nose clears up.
Recently, I've found that I can only sleep on my left side; if I turn to my right side, I experience nasal congestion and difficulty breathing.
In the morning, my nose is also very dry, and then I start to experience nasal congestion and a runny nose again.
After about an hour, my nose clears up again.
This cycle repeats daily.
Today, when I looked in the mirror, I noticed that the nostril that gets congested has a narrower space.
I'm not sure if this is due to nasal polyps or inflammation.

More Info

Nasal congestion is a common issue that can significantly affect one's quality of life. Understanding its causes, symptoms, and potential relief strategies is essential for managing this condition effectively. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a combination of nasal congestion, itching, sneezing, and discomfort, particularly on one side of your nose. Let's delve into the potential causes and remedies for your situation.

Causes of Nasal Congestion
1. Allergic Rhinitis: This is a common cause of nasal congestion, often triggered by allergens such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or mold. Symptoms include sneezing, itching, and a runny nose. If you notice that your symptoms worsen in certain environments or seasons, allergies might be the culprit.

2. Infections: Viral infections, such as the common cold, can lead to nasal congestion. Bacterial infections, like sinusitis, can also cause prolonged symptoms, including facial pain and pressure, especially if you experience thick, colored nasal discharge.

3. Structural Issues: Conditions such as a deviated septum or nasal polyps can lead to chronic nasal congestion. A deviated septum can make one nasal passage smaller, leading to difficulty breathing through that side, especially when lying down.

4. Environmental Factors: Dry air, particularly in winter months or in air-conditioned environments, can lead to nasal dryness and congestion. Additionally, irritants such as smoke, strong odors, or pollution can exacerbate symptoms.

5. Vasomotor Rhinitis: This condition is characterized by nasal congestion and runny nose triggered by non-allergic factors such as changes in temperature, humidity, or even strong emotions.

Symptoms
From your description, it appears you are experiencing several symptoms associated with nasal congestion:
- Itching and Pain: The itchiness and slight pain you feel after cleaning your nose may indicate irritation or inflammation of the nasal mucosa.

- Sneezing and Nasal Blockage: These are common responses to nasal irritation or inflammation.

- Dryness: Waking up with a dry nose can be a sign of inadequate humidity in your sleeping environment or excessive mouth breathing due to nasal blockage.

- Unilateral Congestion: The fact that you can only breathe comfortably through one nostril while lying on your side suggests a possible structural issue or localized inflammation.

Relief Strategies
1. Saline Nasal Irrigation: Using a saline solution to rinse your nasal passages can help clear out mucus and allergens, providing relief from congestion. This can be done using a neti pot or saline spray.

2. Humidifiers: Adding moisture to the air can alleviate dryness in your nasal passages, especially during winter or in dry climates. Ensure to clean the humidifier regularly to prevent mold growth.

3. Allergy Management: If allergies are suspected, consider over-the-counter antihistamines or nasal corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and symptoms. Identifying and avoiding triggers is also crucial.

4. Steam Inhalation: Inhaling steam from a bowl of hot water or during a hot shower can help loosen mucus and relieve nasal congestion.

5. Consultation with an ENT Specialist: Given your symptoms, it may be beneficial to consult an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including imaging studies, to identify any structural issues like a deviated septum or nasal polyps.

6. Avoiding Irritants: Try to minimize exposure to smoke, strong odors, and other irritants that can exacerbate your symptoms.

Conclusion
Nasal congestion can stem from various causes, and identifying the underlying issue is key to effective treatment. Your symptoms suggest a combination of potential allergic reactions and possibly structural issues. Implementing the suggested relief strategies may help alleviate your discomfort, but a consultation with an ENT specialist will provide a clearer diagnosis and tailored treatment plan. Remember, persistent symptoms warrant professional evaluation to rule out any serious conditions and to ensure you receive appropriate care.
