Irregular menstruation with light flow?

Hello Doctor: I started menstruating in fifth grade, but during junior high and high school, my menstrual cycle became very irregular (the flow was just right, but I also experienced dysmenorrhea).
Therefore, I visited a gynecologist in high school to regulate my cycle and also consulted a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner to improve my health.
In college, my periods were still irregular, and for a while, I only menstruated every two months.
However, after that, my cycles became very unstable, and I often had to visit the gynecologist for menstrual induction.
After my period, I also took herbal medicine to regulate my body, but the flow has been decreasing.
I would like to ask the doctor if I need to see a gynecologist for further examination?

Hello Ms.
A-Y: I suggest you visit a gynecologist for an examination.
If no underlying cause is found and it is purely due to individual physiology, medication can certainly be used to regulate your menstrual cycle each month.

Irregular and light menstrual cycles can be concerning, especially when they have persisted since adolescence. It is important to understand that menstrual irregularities can stem from a variety of factors, including hormonal imbalances, stress, lifestyle changes, and underlying medical conditions. Given your history of irregular cycles, painful menstruation, and the recent trend of lighter menstrual flow, it is advisable to seek further evaluation from a gynecologist.

Firstly, menstrual cycles can be affected by hormonal fluctuations. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, and other endocrine issues can lead to irregular cycles and changes in menstrual flow. In your case, since you have experienced irregularities since high school and have sought treatment in the past, it may be beneficial to undergo a thorough evaluation to rule out any underlying conditions. This may include blood tests to check hormone levels, thyroid function, and possibly an ultrasound to assess the ovaries and uterus.

Additionally, lifestyle factors such as stress, diet, exercise, and weight changes can significantly impact menstrual cycles. High levels of stress or significant weight fluctuations can lead to hormonal imbalances that affect menstruation. If you have experienced any major life changes or stressors, it is worth discussing these with your healthcare provider, as they may contribute to your symptoms.

Painful menstruation, or dysmenorrhea, is another aspect of your experience that should not be overlooked. While some discomfort during menstruation is common, severe pain can indicate conditions such as endometriosis or fibroids. If you have not already done so, discussing your pain levels and any associated symptoms with your gynecologist can help in diagnosing any potential issues.

Given that you have been experiencing these symptoms for several years and have tried various treatments without significant improvement, it is essential to seek a comprehensive evaluation. A gynecologist can provide a tailored approach to your situation, which may include lifestyle modifications, hormonal treatments, or further diagnostic testing.

In summary, it is advisable to schedule an appointment with a gynecologist to discuss your irregular and light menstrual cycles. They can perform the necessary evaluations to determine the underlying causes of your symptoms and recommend appropriate treatment options. Early intervention can be crucial in managing menstrual irregularities and ensuring overall reproductive health. Don't hesitate to seek help; your health and well-being are important.
