There is a lump on the skin?
I have a skin allergy to ultraviolet rays and heat, and I am currently undergoing treatment.
However, about three to four months ago, a specific area of my skin would become red and develop blisters after sun exposure.
It healed after treatment, but whenever I come into contact with heat and sunlight again, that area becomes red and blisters again.
Today, I stayed indoors all day and did not come into contact with heat, yet that area of skin swelled up on its own.
It is neither painful nor itchy.
Could you please explain why this is happening? Thank you!
Ting, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/10/07
Dr. Li Zhonghuai reply Surgery
Hello! If only this area of skin has issues after sun exposure while other areas do not, it is likely not an allergy to ultraviolet light or heat.
Continuous treatment has been provided; what could the diagnosis be? If it keeps recurring, a biopsy is recommended.
Take care! Changhua Hospital is concerned about you!

More Info
Understanding skin swelling, particularly in the context of allergic reactions, is crucial for managing symptoms and preventing future occurrences. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing a form of hypersensitivity, possibly related to your skin's reaction to ultraviolet (UV) light and heat. This condition can manifest as localized swelling, redness, and even blistering after sun exposure, which is indicative of a photodermatitis or solar urticaria.
Causes of Skin Swelling in Allergic Reactions
1. Allergic Reactions: Your skin may be reacting to UV radiation as if it were an allergen. This can lead to the release of histamines and other inflammatory mediators, causing swelling and redness. In some cases, this reaction can occur even without direct exposure to sunlight, possibly due to residual effects or changes in skin sensitivity.
2. Heat Sensitivity: Some individuals have skin that is particularly sensitive to heat, which can exacerbate allergic reactions. This can lead to conditions like heat urticaria, where the skin develops hives or swelling in response to increased temperature.
3. Chronic Conditions: Conditions such as chronic urticaria or atopic dermatitis can lead to persistent skin issues. These conditions can cause the skin to be more reactive to environmental triggers, including heat and UV light.
4. Underlying Health Issues: Sometimes, systemic issues such as autoimmune disorders or hormonal changes can influence skin sensitivity and reactivity.
Treatment Options
1. Avoidance: The most effective way to manage your symptoms is to avoid known triggers. This includes minimizing sun exposure, wearing protective clothing, and using broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF.
2. Topical Treatments: Corticosteroid creams can help reduce inflammation and swelling. These should be used under the guidance of a healthcare provider, especially for sensitive areas.
3. Antihistamines: Oral antihistamines can help alleviate symptoms of itching and swelling. Non-sedating antihistamines are preferable if you need to maintain alertness during the day.
4. Moisturizers: Keeping the skin well-hydrated can improve its barrier function and reduce sensitivity. Look for emollient-rich creams that are fragrance-free and designed for sensitive skin.
5. Phototherapy: In some cases, controlled exposure to UV light under medical supervision can help desensitize the skin and reduce reactions over time.
6. Consultation with a Dermatologist: Since your symptoms are recurring and can occur without direct exposure to triggers, it is essential to consult a dermatologist. They may perform patch testing or other diagnostic measures to determine the exact cause of your skin's reaction.
Conclusion
Skin swelling due to allergic reactions can be complex, particularly when it involves environmental triggers like UV light and heat. Understanding the underlying causes and implementing appropriate treatment strategies is vital for managing your symptoms effectively. Regular follow-ups with a healthcare provider can help tailor a management plan that suits your specific needs and reduces the frequency and severity of your skin reactions. Always remember that while some reactions may resolve on their own, persistent or severe symptoms warrant professional evaluation to rule out more serious conditions.
