Confusion Over Pregnancy Test Results: Two Lines to One in 48 Hours - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Share to:

On the first day, there were two lines on the test, and on the second day, there was one line?

Hello Doctor: My menstrual period was around October 6, and my last sexual intercourse was on the 6th, during which a condom was used throughout.
On the 8th, I tested positive with a faint second line, but that same day I experienced heavy bleeding (more than my usual period) and severe abdominal pain (similar to contractions).
After resting, I tested again on the 10th with two different brands of pregnancy tests (during these two days, I continued to have bleeding and abdominal pain, but the amount of blood decreased slightly), and both tests showed a single clear line.
I would like to ask if this should be considered a pregnancy.
Thank you!

Ding, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/10/10

Hello, the arrival of a regular menstrual period generally indicates that there is no pregnancy, and a pregnancy test showing one line confirms this.
Wishing you good health.

More Info

It sounds like you are going through a very confusing and stressful time regarding your pregnancy test results and symptoms. Let’s break down the situation based on the information you provided.

First, you mentioned that your last menstrual period was around October 6, and your last sexual intercourse was on the same day. You took a pregnancy test on October 8, which showed a faint second line, indicating a potential pregnancy. However, you also experienced heavy bleeding and significant abdominal pain, which can be concerning.

The presence of a faint line on a pregnancy test can indicate that there is some level of hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in your system, which is a hormone produced during pregnancy. However, the fact that you experienced heavy bleeding and abdominal pain shortly after this test raises some important considerations.
1. Heavy Bleeding and Pain: The symptoms you described—heavy bleeding and abdominal pain—could suggest a few possibilities. One possibility is that you may be experiencing a miscarriage, especially since the bleeding was heavier than your usual menstrual flow. Miscarriages can occur early in pregnancy and may be accompanied by cramping or pain. Another possibility is that the bleeding could be related to other conditions, such as an ectopic pregnancy, where the fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, often leading to similar symptoms.

2. Follow-Up Testing: Since you took two additional pregnancy tests on October 10, both of which showed a single line, this suggests that your hCG levels may have dropped, which is consistent with a miscarriage. It is important to note that pregnancy tests are most reliable when taken after a missed period, and testing too early can lead to false positives or negatives. Given your symptoms and the test results, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation.

3. Consulting a Healthcare Provider: Given the heavy bleeding and pain you are experiencing, it is crucial to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a physical examination and possibly an ultrasound to determine whether there is an ongoing pregnancy, a miscarriage, or another underlying issue. They may also check your hCG levels through blood tests to monitor how they are changing over time.

4. Understanding Pregnancy Tests: Pregnancy tests work by detecting hCG in your urine. A faint line can indicate a low level of hCG, which may occur in early pregnancy. However, if you are experiencing significant bleeding and pain, the presence of hCG may not necessarily indicate a viable pregnancy.
In summary, while the faint line on your pregnancy test could suggest a potential pregnancy, the heavy bleeding and abdominal pain are concerning and warrant immediate medical attention. It is essential to get a professional evaluation to understand what is happening in your body and to receive appropriate care. Remember that you are not alone in this experience, and seeking help is a vital step in addressing your health and well-being.
